  1. Chapter 14/15 Vocabulary Waves, Light, & Sound

  2. Amplitude The maximum distance that the particles of a wave s medium vibrate from their rest position

  3. Crest The highest point of a wave

  4. Diffraction A change in the direction on a wave when the wave finds an obstacle or an edge, such as an opening

  5. Doppler Effect An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the source or observer is moving

  6. Electromagnetic Wave A wave that consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields, which radiate outward at the speed of light

  7. Frequency The number of cycles or vibrations per unit of time

  8. Interference The combination of two or more waves of the same frequency that results in a single wave

  9. Longitudinal Wave A wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction the wave is traveling

  10. Mechanical Wave A wave that requires a medium through which to travel

  11. Medium The matter through which a wave travels

  12. Photon A unit or quantum of light

  13. Pitch A measure of how high or low a sound is perceived depending on the frequency of sound waves

  14. Reflection The bouncing back of a ray or wave when it hits a surface that it does not go through

  15. Refraction The bending of a wave front as the wave front passes between two substances in which the speed of the wave differs

  16. Sound Wave A longitudinal wave that is caused by vibrations and that travels through a material medium

  17. Standing Wave A pattern of vibration that simulates a wave that is standing still

  18. Transverse Wave A wave in which the particles of the medium move perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling

  19. Trough The lowest point of the wave

  20. Wave A periodic disturbance in a solid, liquid or gas as energy is transmitted through a medium

  21. Wavelength The distance from any point on a wave to an identical point on the next wave
