Food Security Projects in Middle Shabelle Islamic Relief Somalia
Islamic Relief Worldwide IR is an international, an independent humanitarian organization founded in UK in 1984 with Headquarter in Birmingham. We provide help where it is needed most and whenever we are best placed to assist. Responding to disasters and emergencies, IR also promotes sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities regardless of race, religion or gender.
Islamic Relief currently has development programms in more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Middle East and Eastern Europe. Islamic Relief working in six main sectors: livelihoods, education, health and nutrition, child welfare, WASH, emergency relief and disaster preparedness/responses and seasonal programs of Qurbani and Ramadan distributions. Islamic Relief has a consultative status (special category) with economic and social council of the United Nations, is a full member of British NGOs for Overseas Development (BOND) and has framework of Partnership with ECHO, and is a signatory of the Code of Conduct for the international Red Crescent Movements, NGOs in Disaster Relief.

IR OUR CORE OBJECTIVES Our Somalia programme strategy is derived from goals outlined in the Islamic Relief World wide s Global Strategy. Goal 1: Reducing the humanitarian impact of conflicts and natural disasters. Strategic Objective 1.1: Reduce the suffering and losses resulting from conflict or natural disasters. Strategic Objective 1.2: Provide timely, adequate, and relevant emergency assistance for people affected by conflict or natural disasters. Strategic Objective 1.3: Support households and communities affected by disasters to rebuild their livelihoods.
Goal 2: Empowering communities to emerge from poverty and vulnerability Strategic Objective 2.1: Increase assets, income, food security and access to employment opportunities for poor households Strategic Objective 2.2: Improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, through investments in Education, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and health services. In accordance with the prophetic example of speaking out against injustice, we tackle the root causes of poverty and suffering worldwide. Our advocacy and campaigns work gives vulnerable and marginalised communities a strong voice, and actively lobbies for positive social change.
History of Islamic Relief Somalia Islamic Relief Somalia has continued to contribute to the wellbeing of people in need in Somalia since 2006. Islamic Relief responds to the needs of conflict and drought affected people through provision of life saving assistance. We work to provide immediate humanitarian relief and long term sustainable development. IR works in seven main programmatic sectors in Somalia targeting vulnerable communities mostly in rural and remote/underserved areas, and IDP camps. We are currently based and working in several main towns within four states in Somalia. WHAT WE DO Food Security & Livelihoods - Somalia is considered one of the poorest countries in the world. About half the population are pastoralists. The country cannot cope with even the most pressing issues of health, nutrition, education and basic social services. We run food security and livelihoods projects that target most vulnerable households for agricultural, livelihoods, and micro- entrepreneurship. - We support people in Somaliland, Puntland, and South-Central Somalia through our food security & livelihoods programms. Health - Islamic Relief has supported enhancements in providing access to improved healthcare services including provide primary health care services, Health facilities construction that provide wide range of services including immunization against all the immunizable diseases,& maternity services. Other services provided include post-natal (PNC) and pre-natal clinic (ANC) and screening of all patients through laboratory services. - We provide basic health care services to poor and needy people through our three clinics, Daynile, Shibis, and Balcad districts.
Water, Sanitation And Hygiene (WASH) Lack of sanitation, safe water facilities and services and poor hygiene are significant contributors to the high rates of disease in Somalia, Islamic Relief address this in long term development and emergency interventions through water sources development and provision of water through water trucking during acute shortage of water in emergencies. We drilled and constructed deep boreholes, shallow wells and berkads providing access to safe, clean, potable water to people in Somaliland, Puntland and South-Central Somalia. Islamic Relief also supports and works hygiene behavior change through mobilization and hygiene promotion sessions for IDPs and other people living in overcrowded villages. conducting community
Child Welfare We have child welfare programme called Orphan Sponsorship Programme targeting the poorest of poor orphan children, and it s aim to improve their well-being and social status of the orphans, while they are still living with their biological family members in their community. We help these orphans through providing a financial support of 78 Euro on quarterly basis to enable orphan children and their family to fulfil their basic needs and cover their educational expenses. Education Majority of children lack access to primary education in many areas, parents are required to pay for their children s education, and poverty remains the main reason they give for not sending their children to school. We provide access to education, particularly for female and poor students, in rural and pastoral areas of Somalia where the poor families children have no access to go schools. IRS has been working on creating and improving quality education through constructing and furnishing of schools, provision of incentives to the school teachers, and providing educational/learning materials to the students
Humanitarian Relief Islamic Relief responses immediately to where disasters such as floods and drought happen on time, and lifesaving services of food packs, emergency NFI, Hygiene shelter are always supported to the affected people. Seasonal Programs Islamic Relief Somalia also implements seasonal programs of Qurbani and Ramadan projects, are considered the backbone of the organization s emergency relief activities. Many of the people receive Ramadan food packs or Qurbani fresh meat distribution. The seasonal program is mainly aimed to ease hardship and bring joy, pleasure and hope to neediest people during holy months by fulfilling the spiritual and charitable obligations of donors and encouraging generosity to the donor.

Past Weather and Next Week Forecast Past Weather: Moderate rains were recorded in Wanle- wayne on 22, 25, and 26of May, with 10mm, 6m, and 84mm respectively. No rains were recorded in Jowhar in the last week. Forecast up to 9th May: the rainfall in Middle Shabelle is expected to reduce with moderate tolow rainfalls forecasted over eastern and southern parts, while western part is expected to be dry. Jowhar River Levels Currently river level along Jubba is normal for this period of the year with moderate risk of flooding. River level is expected to rise, given the ongoing rains within Ethiopian highlands.
