  2. Research Methodology Course The ISPTC oversaw the introduction of the Research Methodology course in 2015 and deemed it mandatory for HST trainees in all specialties to complete the four modules before being signed off at their final ARCP. Currently taught by Dr Rose Galvin via Moodle.

  3. When do you complete it? You are expected to complete TWO modules in ST3 and TWO Modules in ST4. You must complete the modules in succession. Modules are held once annually only, if you miss a module, you must wait until the next academic year when it occurs again. Modules will take place via Moodle however Module 4, the final module, is a presentation submission.*

  4. Research Modules for 2023 October 26th 2023 : Module 1 February 22nd 2024: Module 2 TBC for your ST4 year November 2024: Module 3 April 2025: Module 4 Presentation Submission

  5. Module 1 Outline Introduction to Evidence Based Medicine Developing a research question and mapping most to appropriate study design Study design strengths and weaknesses Fundamentals of bias, confounding and causality Protocol development Introduction to standardised reporting guidelines

  6. Module 2 Outline Assessing clinical evidence Fundamentals of randomised controlled trials Fundamentals of systematic reviews and meta- analysis Other synopses of evidence, including clinical practice guidelines.

  7. Module 3 Outline Fundamentals of biostatistics Nature of data; descriptive statistics Hypothesis testing; sample size calculation Univariable analysis Multivariable analysis

  8. Module 4 Outline Student presentations protocol and/ or completed research Funding of research and grant applications Peer review publishing: Author, Reviewer, Editor Template of presentation slides will be supplied*

  9. Exemption You may be eligible for an exemption and therefore do not have to complete the course. Exemptions are issued to trainees who have completed a taught MCh, MD or PhD. You must complete the exemption form, found on mSurgery, and return it to me and your administrator with a scan of the certificate you are seeking exemption with and the transcripts of the course. If you have not received a letter from me stating that you are exempt: YOU ARE NOT EXEMPT.

  10. Caution You must have already completed the course you are seeking exemption with to be eligible. You must supply the final certification of this course when applying for exemption In the past, trainees who had MDs/PhDs in progress have waited for their award before applying for an exemption. This is at your discretion.

  11. Caution As the modules are only held once annually, missing modules means that completing the course will creep into your ST5/ST6 years. Unforeseen circumstances cannot be helped but we encourage you to complete the modules in advance of your sign-off year.

  12. Surgical Loupes Fund Once during your training, you are eligible to apply to the Surgical Loupes Fund. Opens February, closes April annually. The percentage of refunds issued is dependent on the volume of applications in a single year and can fluctuate. Unlikely to receive a full refund. An email will be circulated to you in February 2024 announcing that applications to the fund are open. You may also visit the Surgical Loupes page on mSurgery for further details.
