Early 1800s Political Parties Parties debated the following issues: Tariffs Tariffs = tax on imported goods -> increases prices of goods Federalists favored tariffs, Democratic-Republicans opposed Powers of the federal government Ironically, Federalists opposed a loose interpretation of the Constitution -> LA Purchase Democratic-Republicans tended to favor states rights

  3. The Louisiana Purchase (1803) Thomas Jefferson sought to purchase New Orleans from the French Napoleon offered all of Louisiana for $15 million! Doubled the size of the US Jefferson switched from strict to loose

  4. War of 1812 War with Great Britain Impressment War Hawks from the South and West favored war Federalists were against war with England Merchants were hurt by the Embargo Act No land was gained or lost by either side
