  3. Vs. 1 This list is a list of contrasts in life common to everyone Compared to chapter 1 with nature, generations, work Vs. 9 God made an appropriate time for everything. Set eternity in man s heart, even though he will never know God s work from beginning to end. Better to enjoy the life God gives, than to simply view it from a human standpoint. Life is to be enjoyed: please God and do good. Vs. 1- -8 Appointed Time/Season 8 Appointed Time/Season Vs. 9- -18 18 Who is the main character?

  4. Is. 55:8 higher than the earth. Deut. 29:29 but the things revealed belong to us and our sons forever that we may observe all the words of this Law. Is. 55:8- -9 9 God s thoughts and ways are not mine for they are Deut. 29:29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, What if we simply observed all the things God has revealed in Scripture that belong to us and our sons forever? Wouldn t that keep us busy for a lifetime?

  5. Why fear God? God s justice exists in the past, present and future, all at the same time . 3:16 the place of righteousness wickedness. 3:10 occupy themselves. 3:22 happy in his activities. 2:24 gift from the hand of God. Why fear God? Everything He does remains forever. 3:16 I have seen: in the place of justice wickedness and in 3:10 I have seen: the task which God has given sons of men to 3:22 I have seen: there is nothing better for man but to be 2:24 I have seen: eating, drinking and satisfaction in labor is a

  6. God will judge every matter of injustice. God 3:21 the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth? Solomon did not doubt the future existence of the soul; he just had much ignorance on the subject. Barnes Commentary Man should be happy in his activities. Possible Theme: Appointed and appropriate times by God; He will judge all God tested man: so that he sees that both man and beast die 3:21 Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward, and Possible Theme: Appointed and appropriate times by God; He will judge all

  7. Preacher saw: oppressed without comfort. So, he concludes it s better to die or never be born so you don t see evil He saw: rivalry/envy between neighbors, the fool/sluggard folding his hands, not willing to work, or only working for himself. Rest and quietness instead of labor and striving He saw: vanity again in working and laboring with no one to leave it to Who am I working for and who do I plan to leave the results of my labor to?

  8. Two are better than one Why? Companions to labor with Friends keep you accountable A man without companions is like the left hand without the right Talmud (Barnes Commentary) Do YOU need to be a godly companion for someone? Do YOU NEED a godly companion?

  9. A poor and wise lad is better than an old and foolish king who won t take advice. (which describes his son, Rehoboam) Preacher saw: the next president, the next .. There is no end to all the people before him and after him and they will not be happy with him. This too is vanity and striving after the wind. Do I take advice? Do I have godly companions keeping me accountable? Am I a godly companion? Possible Theme: Oppression, companions, receive instructions Preacher saw: all the living throng to the side of the next king, Possible Theme: Oppression, companions, receive instructions

  10. Solomon starts giving imperatives about my relationship with God Guard your steps Draw near and listen Don t be hasty in word or impulsive in thought Let your words be few Don t be late in paying your vow to God: Pay what you vow! Don t let your speech cause you to sin Don t say your speech or vow was a mistake Fear God Don t be shocked by injustice seeming to reign Solomon starts giving imperatives about my relationship with God

  11. A king who cultivates the field, involved with his people, benefits both himself and his people. Money: When good things increase (with money) so do those who consume it The one who loves wealth doesn t sleep as well (worry) as the one who works Riches hoarded by their owner only hurt him You can t take riches with you when you die No advantage to increasing your wealth Money: He who loves it will not be satisfied by it

  12. Eccl. 4:8 himself, is not satisfied with his riches Phil 4:11 and in abundance, in all circumstances Matt. 6:24 and be anxious about life, food, drink, clothing or tomorrow s needs Learn Luke 12:15 greed: life does not consist of possessions Store up treasure in heaven and be rich toward God Eccl. 4:8 The one who works extremely hard but only for Phil 4:11- -12 12 Paul said he had learned learned to be content in need Matt. 6:24- -34 34 Man cannot serve God and money, don t worry Learn to be content in whatever circumstances you are in Luke 12:15- -21 21 Be on your guard against every FORM of

  13. Good and fitting: eat, drink, enjoy the fruit of your labor for that is your reward that God has given you God has empowered man to use the wealth He has given to him, reward and rejoicing in his labor. It s a gift of God God keeps him occupied with the gladness of his heart. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past. NLT Contentment!!!
