Why this project is important to families and the local community services Jay-Anne s Story Jay-Anne- I m parenting for the second time around and let me tell Ya, it s so much harder this time around. I m raising one child that has been diagnosed with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) and the other has global developmental delays, most likely from a brain bleed that he received when he was two months old. Every day is a constant battle of communication barriers, major tantrums, aggression, huge safety issues and sibling rivalry just to name a few. Which leaves no time for self-care, relationships, especially with my husband, and things that I used to enjoy. All this leaves me feeling isolated, desperate, depressed and alone. Denise s Story residential care was necessary. Needed to create communication system. Safety concerns due to having children in same house. Intensity of needs of children, keeping family together. I fell asleep on my couch woke up paralyzed from the waist down went in for spine surgery and came out completely paralyzed. I spent a few months in rehab went t a nursing home then came home. That's when I felt like the biggest burden on my family. I couldn't get any in home services the only thing I was able to get was a homemaker to help 1 time a week. My daughter at the time was 14 yrs old taking care of my personal needs. I hated it so much. I wished my family didn't have to suffer as much as they did to help me. Even after all the time has gone by I still feel like I'm a burden I wished there was more known help out there that could of or would been told to us when I really needed it. My family is amazing I wouldn't be doing as good as I am without them. Some help with son s aggression, due to brain damage. Needs consistency and repetition, goes after sibling, support. Need help showing how to communicate, parent him. Became speech therapist self-taught, had to find a way and learn how to help own children. Did it all on own. Trying to care of sons needs all the time, didn t know why having behavior in public. Isolation due to behavior and safety concerns. 2 on 1 parenting with children with needs. Volunteered to care for other s children not biological. Never was aware of the support being available. Severe safety needs. I chose to be in the HCBS action group because I wanted to see what was out there for families. Our group ended up choosing to do a survey on the HCBS to help DHHS gather information from families that are using the waiver. I m extremely sad to report that I didn t have a clue about this waiver and I have been involved with my local area agency for the past five years.
The purpose of the In Home Supports Waiver: According to the State of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services Division of Long Term Supports and Services Bureau of Developmental Services IHS Waiver Purpose To provide In Home Residential Habilitation, inclusive of personal care, and other related supports and services to promote greater independence and skill development for children or young adults who have a developmental disability and significant medical or behavioral challenges, as determined pursuant to He-M 524, that allow them to remain living at home with their family and actively engaged with their community.
Cutting the Issue: We as parents that are or could use this service have found that there are a lot of discrepancies between agencies, misinformation. Make the most change by providing information to the area agencies. Then found out the DDS is revamping the program, so it was an optimal time to provide feedback direct from families. Survey would be the easiest way to get the answers to the agencies to make the necessary corrections to their policy and practices.
What is the outcome what we would like to see happen
