  1. BELLWORK: 10/29 Our first case study of 20thcentury warfare is guerrilla war & the Algerian War of Independence. As an introduction to guerrilla war tactics/strategies, read pgs. 18-19 and answer the following: 1. How does guerrilla war differ from conventional war? 2. List the strategies and tactics of a guerrilla army. (Include how they acquire supplies) 3. What challenges does guerrilla war pose for occupying forces? 4. Summarize decolonization. What may cause a movement to use guerrilla warfare in an effort to decolonize? When you are finished, continue labeling your map of Asia!

  4. Partner Discussion When studying 20th century warfare, IB divides the conflicts into different types of war (total, limited, guerilla, civil, revolutionary). Is it possible for a war to be multiple types? Why or why not? Think of some examples!!! How did WWII impact European empires & colonies? Who was Charles de Gaulle? Despite European powers giving independence to colonies, France was willing to go to war to maintain control of Algeria. Make a prediction why do you think this is? What would cause France to maintain tight control of Algeria?

Algerian War: Overview 1954-1962 Decolonization War (impacted by WWII) Started in November 1954 - led by the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) Eventually became a three way conflict between: Algerian nationalists (Fehrat Abbas & Ben Bella - FLN) French gov (Organisation de l'arm e secr te OAS) European colonists (Pieds-Noirs) Algeria was seen as an integral part of France and citizens were required to assimilate Religious, political & economic oppression Characterized by use of guerilla warfare, terrorism, and torture by both sides Millions of Algerians were killed or displaced Caused significant political changes in France
