2B Second Grade Parent Handbook Mrs. Pirtle Mrs. Pirtle Room 3 2024-2025
Dear Families, Parent Handbook Welcome to 2ndgrade at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School! We have an exciting year ahead of us! Here is some more information about our classroom policies: Email I want to be available to you during the school year, and email is a great way for us to communicate. I will be sending home a weekly newsletter most every Friday providing important information for the following week. Email is also a great way for you to drop us a note if, for example, your child is getting picked up or will be absent. However, please call the school if you have an urgent message, especially towards the end of the day. I try and check my email at lunch or during plan time, but sometimes situations arise that are out of my control and I am not able to get online. dpirtle@blessedsacramentwichita.com Absences EVERY DAY that your child will be absent (whether planned or due to sickness), please communicate with me and to the school office. If the absence is a planned vacation, doctor appointment, etc., please send an email to myself, as well as attendance@blessedsacramentwichita.com Lunch A lunch menu will be sent home each month. The dates are posted at the bottom of the lunch menu as to when it is due back. We will be sending home two copies a home and a school copy. Please fill out the school form by circling the lunch option wanted and return in the folder. A Chef salad will be the alternate option for the protein this year. Please circle Chef Salad if that is your child s preference.
Snack We will have typically one snack a day in the afternoon. I ask that you send in one healthy snack if you d like for them to partake in snack time. Some suggestions are pretzels, goldfish, cereal/granola bar, grapes, carrots, string cheese, or apple slices. Please do not send snacks that requires utensils. I will not provide snacks for students that forget a snack and I will assume that, if you don t send snacks, you prefer that your child not have one. I encourage the students to bring a fresh water bottle each day. They may refill them at the drinking fountains. The children also have the option to drink from the fountains directly. Birthdays Our school s birthday policy has changed. Each month, the school community will celebrate ALL birthdays for the month during the lunch period. Treats will be provided by the school. Other outside treats are not allowed. Students will be able to wear jeans and a spirit shirt ON their birthday to celebrate. Birthdays falling on a weekend may be celebrated on the last school day before, and summer birthdays may be celebrated on the student s half birthday. Birthdays are announced daily on the intercom and noted by special attention given in individual classrooms. In the classroom, the student will get to be Star Student on (or around, for multiple birthdays in one week) their birthday week. Those children with summer birthdays will have a celebration during the school year around their half birthday. Students will also be able to bring in a Show and Tell (special keepsake, photo, etc.) while they are Star Student. Volunteering in Second Grade During the school year, there will be numerous opportunities for you to be involved in your child s education. I believe that parents are the primary educators for their children but I d like to encourage your participation according to the flexibility in your schedule. It is our goal to provide many opportunities for you to volunteer. The 2ndgrade Room Parents will be sending information via email in the coming weeks. To volunteer at Blessed Sacrament, you must be Virtus trained.
Homework In 2ndgrade, our priority with homework is to set a consistent routine that can set the foundation for the rest of the students school experience. I highly suggest reading every day with your child for at least 20 minutes. Students will bring any homework from school in their Take-Home folder. Please be sure to check the agenda every day. Students will highlight homework in their agenda. Any written homework should be returned the following school day. I will not be sending home a Friday folder this year. All graded papers will come home regularly in the Take Home Folder. One side will say, Return to School (homework, notices etc.) and the other side will say Keep at Home . Please check the folder each day (Mon.-Fri.) and return any important information on the next school day. Behavior Blessed Sacrament has adopted the VBRD program (Virtue-Based Restorative Discipline). It is a wonderful program that helps teachers and students establish strong relationships while dealing with behavior concerns in a positive way. The students are grouped in teams which will encourage them to respectfully work together while problem-solving. I will be handing out Baron Bucks for good choices. Students will then be able to spend their bucks on small treasures and privileges. Some examples are: stickers, erasers, fun pencil, desk pet, shoes off in class, lunch with a friend in the classroom, and homework pass. All Students will be using Honor Cards this year. The card will be clipped in your child's agenda and needs to be checked daily. If they receive a mark from a teacher the parent will need to sign to acknowledge they saw it. No signature results in an additional Honor mark. If your child fills the blue card a parent/teacher conference will be scheduled. Filing a second card will require a meeting with Administration. Each student will get a new blue card at the beginning of each quarter. Lost cards result in a detention and advancing to the next card I ask that you sign your child s agenda EVERY night it is sent home. Your support is much appreciated and will only enhance your child s success in my classroom. Any more questions? I hope this packet has been helpful to you! Please keep it for reference throughout the school year. Please don t hesitate to call the school or email if you have any questions about the procedures or policies. I am excited to get the school year started and look forward to getting to know your student and family! Kind regards, Mrs. Debra Pirtle
