WELCOME TO THE 5TH GRADE BACK TO SCHOOL PRESENTATION
HEALTH AND SAFETY Please be aware that we must follow all state and county guidelines regarding COVID-19. Students must: Wear mask or face covering daily Wash and sanitize hands multiple times over the course of the day Maintain social distancing 3 feet with a mask 6 feet without mask Perform a daily self-screening at home before coming to school
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Our goal is that each student becomes a successful fifth grader and future citizen. We will be using Social Emotional Learning goals to help with that. The behaviors we look for and teach are: self management, self awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills. We want all 5thgraders to learn personal responsibility and have a smooth transition to middle school when they leave us. In order to facilitate this we will be focusing on time management, behavior choices, self-advocacy, and organization. Please encourage your student to self advocate and come to their teacher to discuss any issues that need to be resolved.
CELL PHONES We understand that today cell phones are an important part of communication with your student. Students can bring their cell phones with them to school, but during the day we do ask that their phones be turned off and stay in their backpacks throughout the day. Students may turn them back on as they leave the building at the end of the day. Students should not have them in their pockets or out while at recess. If you need to get an urgent message to your student during the school day, we ask that you call the office and they can relay the information.
CLASS FEES/TECH FEES Class Fees We asked for a donation of $20-40 for class materials this year. All supplies this year have been/will be purchased by teachers. We did this to ensure that all students have the same materials necessary for class, whether in person or digital. Tech Fees We will be using the student laptops daily. The tech fee of $50 is for students new to our school, and the $35 fee is insurance that covers regular/wear tear. Fees and forms must be complete in order for devices to go home for student use.
LUNCH/MASK BREAKS Since students will either be eating outside during lunch, or in the class room, we are asking that students try to keep their lunch nut free for the safety of all the students. We are handwashing/sanitizing throughout the day, but this is just an additional piece that we can do for students with nut allergies. Mask Breaks are just that a break from wearing the mask. We do ask students to stay a minimum of 6 feet apart while they have their mask off.
GAAs GAA- There are 8 GAAs that students will be required to complete over the course of the school year, 2 per quarter. Due dates: Quarter 1: 9/4 and 10/2 Quarter 2: 11/6 and 12/11 Quarter 3: 1/29 and 3/5 Quarter 4: 4/23 and 5/21 If students complete all 8 by March 12, they will receive special recognition at our GAA party that will be held at the end of the year. Distance learners are not required to complete this task while at home, but if they return to the classroom, it will become a requirement.
AR Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program that allows us to track students independent reading progress over the course of the school year. Points are earned by passing comprehension quizzes on their books, they must get 70% or higher in order to earn points. AR Points per quarter 15 points for the first quarter 20 points for the second quarter 25 points for the third quarter 30 points for the fourth quarter They may take AR tests through Renaissance Learning or Myon, both links are on student devices, and are available throughout the school day as time allows. This is the same for both in person and distance learning.
GRADES/IC Since most work will be assigned digitally, students are generally given multiple days to complete an assignment. If they do not complete their assignments within the allotted time frame, they cannot receive full credit. They will be allowed to turn in work up to 1 week late, before it will be counted as a 0. Infinite Campus Due to the amount of time students will be given to complete work and district guidelines on paper handling, grades may delayed in Infinite Campus. We will at least try to put in whether an assignment was turned in or is missing weekly, with actual grades the following week. Students will be checking Infinite Campus (IC) on a consistent basis, so they will be aware of their grades regularly. We encourage you to download the IC app to be kept aware of student progress.
DIGITAL LEARNING Mrs. Ponce is currently the 5thgrade distance learning teacher. Due to the fluid nature of school this year, students may be transitioning in/out of distance learning. (Please be aware there may be a conversion period.) Important Ideas: Daily Required Attendance Check in AM/PM Students and Parents will be contacted daily with a schedule and assignment list Students must be ON TIME and PREPARED for daily video meeting Students will be subject to the same classwork requirements as in person learners Students need a designated workspace in the home for video meetings and schoolwork, such as a desk or table, without distractions.
