  3. Arrival & Dismissal Students can begin entering the classroom at 8:00am. Everyone should be in the room by 8:30am. In carpool, please do not drop students off or pick them up in the back near the trailers or in the cul-de-sac behind the Palace. We ask this for safety reasons. For the safety of all students, the building will be locked at 2:30. Please be proactive and make preparations to pick up your students before this time if they need to be checked out early.

  4. Literacy Instruction MINI-LESSON GUIDED READING GROUPS LITERACY STATIONS WORD WORK (LETTERLAND) READING COMPREHENSION WRITING VOCABULARY

  5. mClass Assessments Students will take county mandated reading assessments three times throughout the year (BOY, MOY, EOY) Students are assessed by a different 2ndgrade teacher, but the teacher will stay the same for MOY and EOY assessments. COMPREHENSION! is key! A written comprehension piece is part of their assessments. It is important for students to be able to comprehend both verbally and through their writing.

  6. Writers Workshop Mini-lesson The three types of writing that we will be focusing on this year are: narrative, opinion, and informative. The writer s process includes: Pre-writing Drafting Conferencing Revising Editing Publishing Writing Rubric

  7. Letterland Systematic phonics emphasis for daily support in literacy learning- 3rdyear for these children!! 2ndgrade focus- advanced phonics patterns, syllable types, syllable division, prefixes and suffixes Multisensory methods for reading and spelling Interactive strategies to engage children s attention Emphasis on fluency in sounds, words, sentences and stories (reader s theater plays!) 5 day cycle of words- practice and assessment Daily whole group mini lessons, small group lessons, independent and partner word work practice

Math Curriculum Mini-lesson, followed by guided math groups and math stations Math Talk Math Journals Please have your child practice their addition and subtraction fact fluency nightly (sums and differences up to 20) There is an increased emphasis on students being able to explain their math thinking in numbers, pictures AND words.

  9. Science & Social Studies Big topics in Science Sound Solids and Liquids Weather Life Cycle of Butterflies Genetics Big topics in Social Studies Citizens and Government History and Culture Economics Geography

  10. Tenmarks Your child will participate in a web-based learning program throughout the year: Tenmarks (Math). This program is researched based and is proven to help supplement your child s learning. We encourage your children to use this program at home, if possible. If your child completes Tenmarks assignments at home, have them complete the personal work , not classroom work . Children will access these websites through Clever; see handout for website

  11. Homework Wake County recommends 20 minutes a night for 2ndgrade homework. There will be ELA homework distributed weekly. Math homework will be given as well. You will learn more about your child s individual homework procedures in classroom presentations.

  15. Behavior As a school, we are working to design a behavior plan that aligns with our leadership model. We believe that all behavior is communication and we seek to understand every child s individual needs. Teachers will continue to communicate with you on a regular basis regarding your child s behavior. In classrooms, we will use positive reinforcement of expected behaviors and consequences for individual students and is more aligned with our school theme of leadership.
