  1. A Private Experience a Mind Map By Connor Moran

  2. Plot Plot Two women from Nigeria are in a marketplace when they are caught in the middle of a riot. They run away and hide in an abandoned store. Despite these two women coming from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, they form a friendship and bond together during this experience. At the end of the story, the two women part ways with one keeping a scarf. There is perhaps the beginning of the future grief on her face, but she smiles a slight, distracted smile before she hands the scarf back to Chika and turns to climb out of the window. P10 The Women.

  3. Symbolism Symbolism There are many symbols in this story but the one that stands out the most is the scarf. The scarf symbolizes the bond between the two women despite their different upbringings. May I keep your scarf? The bleeding might start again.

  4. Point of View Point of View The point of view of this story is third person omniscient. The narrator of the short story is speaking thought the voice of Chika. Chica looks at the threadbare wrapper on the floor it is probably one of the two the woman owns. She looks down at her own denim shirt and red T shirt embossed with a picture of the Statue of Liberty, both of which she bought when she an Nnedi spent a few summer weeks with relatives in New York. No your wrapper will get dirty, she says. P3

  5. Theme Theme One of the many themes of this story is the ethnic and religious conflict. The two women from different backgrounds form a sister-like bond and set their differences aside and help each other through their time of need. She wets one end of her scarf at the tip and cleans the cut of Chika s leg, then ties the wet scarf around it, knotting it at the calf. P9 The Women

  6. Literary Devices Literary Devices There are many literary devices used in A Personal Experience from similes, metaphors and images. Then people around her were running, pushing against one another, overturning wheelbarrows full of yams, leaving behind bruised vegetables they had just bargained hard for. P2

  7. Conflict Conflict Person vs Society The story describes the real life ethnic and religious conflict between the Muslims and Christians. Hausa Muslims are hacking down Igbo Christians with machetes, clubbing them with stones. P2
