The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Sunday PM, October 2, 2022
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Why are we examining this topic? A. Prevalence of the Catholic church in Texas 1. Catholics - nearly 4.7 million members (2010) 2. Nearly 19% of Texans (2010) B. Importance of Biblical authority 1. The Catholic Church was not the church founded by the Lord (Matt. 16:18, Matt. 15:8-9; Eph. 4:4-5). 2. The Catholic Church teaches doctrines contrary to the Bible (Heb.9:27; 1 Tim.2:5; Matt.23:9; Mk.16:16; Ezek.18:20; 1 Tim.4:3, etc.)
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Origins of the Catholic church: A.The first use of the phrase Catholic (from a Greek word meaning Universal ) Church occurred in a letter written about 110 AD by Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrnaeans. B.First Council of Nicaea, which resulted in the Nicene Creed, occurred in 325 AD. This resulted in a uniform doctrine. C.The Bible was finished in the 1st Century AD - clearly the Catholic Church IS NOT the first church! We New Testament Christians derive our authority strictly from the N.T., not from the councils and creeds formulated by fallible men!
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? D. Instead of calling themselves by the authorized Biblical name - Christian, they call themselves Catholics . E. Disciples were first called Christians in Antioch Acts 11:26. We are not to be called by denominational names!
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Catholic teaching: Baptism - Infant baptism, followed by baptism when old enough to believe. Bible teaches otherwise - (Ezekiel 18:20; Acts 2:38; Mk. 16:16; etc.) Church leadership - A single priest for each church, instead of a plurality of Elders. Then a human organization ultimately headed by the Pope in Rome. Bible teaches otherwise - (Titus 1:5-7; 1 Pet. 5:1; Acts 15:6)
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Catholic teaching: Original Sin - The Bible teaches otherwise - (Ezekiel 18:20; Matt.19:14) Purgatory - People can be sent to Purgatory if bad but not unredeemable instead of Hell - The Bible teaches otherwise (Hebrews 9:27; Luke 16:22-23) Religious Titles - The Bible teaches otherwise (Matt. 23:8-10)
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Catholic teaching: Praying to Mary - The Bible teaches otherwise - (1 Tim.2:5) Forbidding to Marry - The Catholic practice of priests and nuns to not marry. The Bible teaches otherwise (1 Tim.4:1-3) Forbidding to Eat Meats - Catholics having meatless Fridays (fish is allowed), and giving up eating meat during Lent . (1 Tim.4:3)
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Catholic teaching: Papal Infallibility - Catholic dogma says that if the Pope declares something Ex Cathedra ( From the chair ), he is infallible. Matthew 16:23 says otherwise. (Get behind me, Satan !)
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Catholic teaching: Papal Worship
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Catholic teaching: Papal Worship: On the previous slide, I showed an image of Papal Worship. The Bible teaches otherwise. Twice, in the book of Revelations, the Apostle John attempted to worship the angel who showed him wondrous things - See Rev. 19:10, and 22:9. And twice, John was told ...I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God .
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Key Takeaways from this sermon: John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth . Eph. 4:4-5 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; Jesus Christ DID NOT establish a multiplicity of churches - He established HIS church - see Matt. 16:18. 1 Cor. 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints .
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? ? Key Takeaways from this sermon: Matt.15:13 ...Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted . Matt. 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven . Gal. 4:16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? Key Takeaways from this sermon: We implore everyone who hears or sees this sermon online to carefully and prayerfully study the Scripture to see if what I taught is in accordance with the Bible. We would WELCOME the opportunity to study further from the Bible with you if you have further questions.
The Catholic Church - Biblical or Not? I did not intend to delve into an exhaustive look at all the false teachings of the Catholic Church. Instead, I wanted to concentrate on some of the key errors that they teach. I hope that this study has been profitable and useful. That was my sole intention.
