Religion News Service Institutional Profile Presentation BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY BY: DARLENE LEIFSON
History & Mission Established as Brigham Young Academy by Brigham Young in 1875. Founded to educate church members from within its own faith tradition. You ought not to teach even the alphabet or the multiplication tables without the Spirit of God. BYU is dedicated to upholding both religious and intellectual rigor. BYU maintains a strict Honor Code by which faculty, staff, and students are expected to abide.
Defining Moments oTensions exist between BYU s mission to advance both faith and intellectual rigor. oExcommunicated Church intellectuals are often affiliated with BYU. oThe AAUP has charged BYU with a lack of academic freedom for its faculty. oIt s sports teams do not play on the Sabbath. oBYU s most controversial moments concern student protests of its Honor Code. oA positive moment took place in 1989 when BYU opened its Jerusalem Center. Organizational Structure BYU is overseen by a Board of Trustees. In 1939 the Church organized all educational entities, including BYU, under its Church Educational System. BYU s Board of Trustees and the Church Board of Education are one and the same entity. The Board of Trustees appoints a President currently Kevin J. Worthen. BYU s executive structure resembles that of other universities. The depth of professional and academic experience represented by BYU s Board is unique among private religious institutions. BYU s organizational structure reflects its paradoxical mission to build faith and pursue intellectual excellence. slate.com

Summary The history, organization, and financial structure of BYU demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of its affiliation with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Recent controversies highlight the changing demographics of the Church, and by extension, BYU s student population. BYU s seemingly paradoxical commitment to both religious orthodoxy and intellectual excellence have produced tensions which students and faculty find difficult to navigate. Nevertheless, the Church s conservative financial orientation and its support of BYU ensure BYU s long-term sustainability and its evolution as an institution. usnews.com
