AP RESEARCH: PART II OF AP CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE
TASK COMPONENTS
IMPORTANT COURSE GUIDELINES: Highlights from the syllabus: Suggested Text: Practical research: Planning and design by Leedy, P. and Ormrod, J. Grading Policies: 40% -Major Project Components 30%- Process Logs/Annotations 20% -Weekly Work 10% -Meetings No late work accepted. Students are encouraged to request an extension before an assignment is due in order to avoid late work penalties.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: An academic paper of 4,000 5,000 words that includes these: Introduction Method, Process, or Approach Results, Product, or Findings Discussion, Analysis, and/or Evaluation Conclusion and Future Directions Bibliography A 20-minute presentation and defense of the research project An ongoing portfolio (PREP) that documents the inquiry process
MENTOR REQUIREMENT Students are expected to have a mentor or expert adviser to help them throughout the year with aspects of their project. Students should meet with their mentors once per grading cycle. Mentors cannot be another student but may be an extended family member, community member, or other adult that has some background in their chosen topic. It is recommended that the mentor have experience with the academic research process.
PAST RESEARCH TOPICS How do the environmental impacts of rising sea levels occur around North America shape US teenager's perception on global climate change? Does listening to music under three musical conditions (no music, instrumental only, and vocals) have an effect on the reading comprehension abilities of GT high school juniors? Does wakeful rest, along with high confidence and conscientiousness personality traits, have a higher accuracy in a varied recognition memory test than a math task, correlated with low confidence and neuroticism personality traits, in gifted and talented high school students? What specific neurobiological, genomic, and epidemiological constituents Does studying while listening to a preferred genre of music increase memory performance to a greater extent than studying in silence? Which factors contribute to the prevalence of food insecurity amongst individuals across Harris County in the 21st century? Within groups of serial killer types (power/thrill, sexually based, ideology, and anger based), to what extent is there a correlation among the 20th and 21st century US serial killers within each type regarding their childhood, adolescence, and family life?
