"Workbook to Clarify Academic Questions Prior to Registering a Doctoral Project with the Primary Supervisor" First name Last name | X. Month 20XX | Place Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc.
Important notes in advance: "Please try to present the topic and research questions of your work as precisely and meaningfully as possible! Please clarify with your supervisors whether you need an animal experiment approval an ethics vote, or both! Note: If you are pursuing a publication-based doctorate, please be aware that some journals may also require an ethics vote for work that do not require one under German law. Please provide meaningful details about the sub-steps and investigations! Please specify a realistic and meaningful processing time. For example, do not write '6 months' if you intend to conduct a study with patients that spans several years!" 2 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
Basic information to be clarified: Optionaler Untertitel Start of work: Topic or working title of the doctoral project in max. 160 characters: 3 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
The research question or main hypotheses of the doctoral project in 4,000 characters 4 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
The following sub-steps/investigations are required to address the research question of the doctorate: 5 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
Questions regarding presence and times for completing the work: Optionaler Untertitel Consider how much effort it takes you to produce your work per week or month: Think about what attendance times will be necessary for you: Is a sabbatical semester for research purposes required, and if so, how many months will be exclusively dedicated to research? Can you already foresee reasons why a prompt processing of the research question might be affected? 6 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
Make sure you know whether an ethics vote is required! If investigations are carried out on humans, with human material or with personal data (i.e. collection and/or evaluation of data, such as treatment data), the vote of the responsible medical ethics committee must be obtained before the investigation begins. This also includes retrospective evaluations. The framework conditions for the proper conduct of the study must be ensured. A (subsequent) consultation by the ethics committee after completion of the work is not possible. There are currently three medical ethics commissions in the state of Berlin: the Charit Ethics Commission, the Ethics Commission of the Berlin Medical Association and the Ethics Commission of the State of Berlin. These committees have different responsibilities. Please visit the website of the Charit Ethics Committee to find out more about the responsibilities of the Charit Ethics Committee: https://ethikkommission.charite.de/ The doctoral candidate should ensure that a corresponding vote has been obtained. We would like to point out that the vote of an ethics committee must also be obtained in advance if this is a prerequisite for the acceptance of a manuscript by a publisher. Brief explanation if no ethics vote is necessary: 7 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
Is the collection and evaluation of data necessary? Note: In the case of a quantitative evaluation, you must submit a certificate from a statistician accredited by the doctoral committee stating that the type and scope of the statistical work is sufficient when you apply to open your doctoral procedure. Alternatively, you can also take advantage of statistical advice while working on your project. You can find more information about this on our website. In the case of a qualitative thesis, you must submit a certificate from an expert in qualitative methods accredited by the Doctoral Commission stating that the methodology used and its implementation are not objectionable when you apply for the opening of the doctorate. Alternatively, you can also take advantage of advice on qualitative methods while working on your project. You can find more information about this on our website. The doctoral committee reserves the right to check the correct application of qualitative methods individually. Further information can be found on the website of the doctoral office: https://promotion.charite.de/promotionsverfahren/po_2017/promotionsvereinbarung/ 8 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc.
Scientific methods primary supervisior: Optionaler Untertitel Please clarify with your first supervisor which scientific methods required to work on the research question have already been tested and established by the first supervisor: Please clarify with your first supervisor which scientific methods are still to be established by the first supervisor in order to work on the research question: 9 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
Further information: When completing the form, you will be asked to provide detailed information on your academic career to date using keys (e.g. a code for the university at which you obtained your degree entitling you to a doctorate). This information is provided using the corresponding keys. The key lists can be found at the bottom of the page under the following link: https://promotion.charite.de/links_downloads/. Form of the doctorate (monograph or publication doctorate): Make sure that you correctly indicate the form (publication or monograph) of the doctorate you wish to pursue. A change from one form to the other is possible during the doctorate after consultation with the supervisors, but the academic degrees Ph.D. and MD/Ph.D. are excluded from this. Language of the doctoral thesis: Clearly state the language in which your doctoral thesis is written. This refers to the main text of the doctoral thesis, not to the language of the published research results (publication). The doctoral thesis can be written in German or English, whereby English is mandatory for the academic degrees Ph.D. and MD/Ph.D.. Total workload: Enter the estimated workload for the dissertation (days per month or hours per week), as well as the total workload in months. This gives an indication of how long the research work and the writing of the dissertation are likely to take. Details of the first, second and, if applicable, third supervisor: Make a note of the contact details of the supervisors in advance. 10 Optional: clinic, center, workplace/special area, etc
