  2. WHAT IS ASAC? The Academic SpecialistAdvisory Committee (ASAC) provides the governance structure for the academic specialist community. ASAC consists of elected and appointed individuals from the Academic Specialist community. ASAC provides advice to the Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Academic Human Resources on matters of common interest.The operating principles and election procedures for ASAC are defined in the ASACbylaws. We serve as your representative to Academic Governance with voting rights on Faculty Senate and University Council. There are 6 subcommittees:Bylaw, DEI, Elections, Forum, Outreach, and Promotion

  3. INTRODUCTIONTO THE SPECIALIST COMMUNITY 17% (n = 970) of Michigan State University s faculty a n d academic staff are appointed as Academic Specialists. Academic Specialists are defined by four categories: appointment type, functional area, appointment term, andrank. FunctionalArea Advising Curriculum Development Outreach Research Teaching AppointmentType Continuing: Two 3-year probationary periods that lead to full continuing status similar to tenure system. Fixed Term: Appointed with an end date on an academic year or annual basis for shorter periods. AppointmentT erm Earning Senior Specialist Rank Annual (AN) Full year appointment Salary paid in 12 installments 22 vacation days Academic (AY) Nine-month appointment Salary paid in 10 installments No vacation days Sustained period of excellence in the performance of assigned duties together with the recognition by peers and colleagues both within the University and regionally, nationally, and internationally.

ASAC GENERAL MEETINGSANDTABLETALKS General Meetings Table Talks The 2nd Wednesday of the month 11:30 12:30 p.m. The 2nd Wednesday of the month 12:30 1:30 p.m. (immediately following General Meeting), or Third Thursday Zoom Zoom Specialists are invited to come and participate; some specialists even sit on subcommittees. Specialists are encouraged to submit questions to presenters via Qualtric.
