Accelerated Science Program at Trumansburg Middle School
The accelerated science program at Trumansburg Middle School offers an opportunity for motivated students to excel in their scientific pursuits. Starting in 8th grade, students can skip physical science and dive into Regents Earth Science, earning high school credit upon successful completion. Considerations, requirements, and reasons for and against acceleration are outlined to help families make informed decisions.

Exploring Accelerated Science Trumansburg Middle School Spring 2020
What does accelerated science look like in the middle school?
The accelerated science option begins in 8th grade. Students accepted into the program will skip 8th grade physical science and take Regents Earth Science instead. Students will take the NYS regents exam in June. Upon successful completion of this class, students will receive high school credit and their grades will become part of their official high school transcript. 3
Why take accelerated science? Your seventh grader has a curiosity and love of science. Your seventh grader is self motivated, organized, and interested. Allows for students to take more science classes in high school. 4
Reasons NOT to accelerate in Science Your child wants to be in the same classes as their friends. YOU want your child to be motivated by the class. Your child is good at science. 5
Things to consider As part of the 8th grade Earth Science class, students have 2 periods of science every other day to meet all NYS lab requirements (1200 lab minutes) Students in band & chorus would have no room in their schedules for a study hall. Consider student s other obligations in and out of school (sports, clubs, theater, etc ) Accelerated students are expected to maintain a quarterly average of 85%. Grades will be evaluated the 1st 10 weeks. Students below an 85% will be moved to an 8th grade science class. 6
A happy stress-free child on a normal science track is better than a stressed out , anxious child on an accelerated track. 7
Requirements for Acceleration 90% or better average in 6th & 7th grade science. 80% or better in core academic classes. Recommendation from 7th grade science teacher Recommendation from ELA teacher / iready scores. Recommendation from Math teacher / iready scores. Students are required to meet 4 out of the 5 to be considered for acceleration. 8

I remember the class pace did pick up a bit and I had to get used to that. It was exciting but also stressful at times. I got to be surrounded with other motivated students that were eager to do the class activities, especially labs.Taking accelerated science enabled me to have an "extra" year to take more science classes in high school. If I hadn't taken accelerated science I would have not been able to take AP Biology, since last year I would have taken chemistry and this year I am in the New Visions Engineering program. Wren Martinson H.S Senior 11
the workload is sometimes difficult, but if you work hard enough its completely doable. Learning the material is interesting and fun, as well as having a tight knit group of people who work well together. My work ethics and my ability to learn on my own improved.Definitely try it! It can be so much fun and there s no harm in signing up, because you can back out at any point. It s a great class and is good for students that work quicker and are motivated. Maren Friedman 8th Grade Student 12
I sometimes found the fast paced class too fast for me at some points. I found it nice to be challenged and to do different more advanced things with the people who really cared about learning. Having taken the accelerated class, I have more opportunities to take different sciences sophomore year. I also met many new people from different grades. I do notice you have to work extra hard to keep up, as it is a challenging course! Be totally ready to put in just a little extra effort, and do your homework on time! Libby Tielens HS Freshman 13
I think that overall it was not too challenging but just something I had to get used to. It definitely picks up the pace of learning and that is something that I wasn t used to at the time. I have had the opportunity to take more classes and find out what parts of science I am interested in. Freshman year it was weird being in the same class as sophomores and sometimes juniors but that is something you should get used to. I would highly suggest it. I would also tell them that if you sign up and end up thinking it s too hard then you can just go to your counselor and go back to the regular science. But I think that if you try hard and focus it isn t crazy difficult to succeed. Jack Masters HS Senior 14
Next Steps If interested in Accelerated Science discussion Apply Review Notification Have a discussion with your student about whether this is the best fit for them. Parents & students fill out an interest form and submit to student services. School will review interest forms and determine if student meets acceleration requirements. You will hear back from the school over the summer. 15
