18th Meeting of the Southern African and Islands Hydrographic Commission National Report by B.G. Chigona MALAWI SAIHC 9, 10 - 12 May, 2022
TOP ACHIEVEMENT DURING THE YEAR Completion of bathymetric Survey in shire River at Kamwamba- for construction of thermal power plant intake; Completion of Bathymetric Survey at Liwonde Railway bridge- for installation of water discharge, flow and level sensors; Cross Section Survey of Lilongwe River is in progress- for delimitation of 100-years water level to mitigate disasters caused by flood;
TOP CHALLENGES AND /OR OBSTRUCTIONS Modern Hydrographic Equipment need to be purchased and installed on the vessel; Lacking expertism and capacity in the production of a Pilot book; Data acquisition, processing and chart production software need to be upgraded or purchase new ones; Department printing press is not functional which makes chart printing difficult;
TOP PLANS THAT AFFECT THE REGION We are striving to get our staff trained in Hydrography and nautical cartography, hence, continuous lobbying with the government to join and become a full member of IHO; The formation of SAIHC African Great Lakes and Rivers sub- working group will assist in eliminating some of the problem faced in this region more specially in Malawi and to fully participate in SAHIC activities; The on going bilateral virtual meetings between UKHO and Malawi Hydrographic Office will greatly assist to bring Malawi government officials on board;
