Conditions for Flow Impacts of Flow Your skills meet the challenge There are constraints involved in the activity, like rules or deadlines Timely feedback keeps you on track Intense concentration Diminished self- consciousness Distorted sense of time Deep fulfillment of engaging in an activity for its own sake Doing your personal best
Flow examples Creative activities (art, writing, photography) Team sports (basketball, hockey, tennis) Games (chess, poker, bridge) Work (when it is a calling ) Playing a musical instrument (piano, cello ) Gardening, cooking, painting Long distance running, mountain climbing
Checklist for Flow Engage in clear, goal-directed, rule-bound activities Make the activity meaningful to you Attend to feedback Ignore distractions and remain focused on the task Take creative control of the process or product Making an investment and engaging in a task.
Just for a few minutes, as you write, please Don t plan or criticize your writing Don t worry about grammar or form Don t reread or correct Don t stop until the time is up
1.Where did the day go? Write about the last time you were so completely absorbed in what you were doing that you didn t notice the passage of time. What were you doing? How did it feel to be engaged with something so fully? You can start with, Last time I lost track of time was when I was and reflect for 7 minutes.
2. Re-packing a Suitcase We are all on a journey from the past to the future. We have all been travelling for a while. Let s take a moment to pause and repack our suitcase. First, imagine that you can only pack five things for the near future to help your life to have more flow. Whom or what do you need to take with you and why? Take a moment to free-write about five things, people, qualities, experiences, strengths, values, beliefs, attitudes, etc. Now think about the things you have been carrying with you until now but didn t find useful? What five things, qualities, people, experiences, beliefs, attitudes would you like to unpack? Continue free-writing for 8 minutes.
