NSF experience Omari H. Swinton Howard University
My NSF timeline Meeting about grants All other grants applications had failed. I volunteered or was recruited to participate on about 5 NSF review panels or more. I started to understand how to write an NSF grant because I read over 50 before I submitted my first one.
First Idea did not work My initial idea I wrote a one page and talked with the program director They told me it wasn t going to work Found a better idea I wrote a one page and talked with the program director They said it was better
Writing the proposal I had as many people as possible read it. Focused and made clear what my intellectual merit and broader impacts were. Made sure that a reviewer would believe that I could complete the project Rewrite and word-smithed the proposal probably 35 times.
Worked with my research office My research office helped and reviewed all aspects of the proposal. I did not wait till the last minute. I made adjusted based on their feedback.
Yeah! I Was Awarded an NSF grant My proposal received excellent reviews. I Was awarded my NSF grant. I will close out that project this year.
