Acts 2 Possible Theme for chapter 1: Holy Spirit promised; Jesus taken up; 12thapostle chosen Possible Theme for chapter 2: Holy Spirit came on Pentecost; Peter witnessed in Jerusalem Acts 2 is the fulfillment of Jesus promise in 1:5,8 When: Day of Pentecost, annually, 50 days after First Fruits Jesus was crucified ON Passover, raised on First Fruits First Fruits is the day AFTER the Sabbath, during the 7 days of Unleavened Bread
Cross References John 1:29-33 Jesus: The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit I Cor. 5:7-8 Christ our Passover Lamb: crucified I Cor. 15:20-33 Christ was raised from the dead as the first fruits: Promise of more to come Pentecost was 10 days after Jesus promise (1:8) Acts 1:3 He appeared over a period of 40 days after His resurrection, Holy Spirit would baptize them not many days from now: 10 days later
Acts 2:1-5 Believers were gathered in one place, sudden violent noise of a mighty rushing wind from heaven filled the whole house where they were staying Tongues of fire distributed themselves: VISIBLE As that happened, they were filled with Holy Spirit They were baptized with Holy Spirit Holy Spirit came on them They were filled with Holy Spirit When they were filled, He gave them utterance to speak with other tongues/languages At that time, Jews from every nation were living in Jerusalem
Acts 2:6-13 The noise drew a crowd to where they were The people were bewildered because they heard their native language spoken, telling of the mighty acts of God (vs. 11) Galileans speaking in different languages: foreigners, not educated in foreign languages Results: Amazement and perplexity astonished out of one s senses Results: thought they were drunk with sweet wine
Acts 2:14-18 Peter: explained, defended and applied prophecy Joel: God said He would pour forth His Spirit on ALL mankind HIS bondslaves, both men and women but NOT ALL people. HIS PEOPLE Those far off Gentiles (2:39) as well as Jews When: In the Last Days Heb. 1:1-2 The last days began with Jesus I Pet. 1:18-21 Jesus appeared in these last times for the sake of His redeemed. I am His redemption 2 Pet. 3:3-4 Mockers will mock and question 2 Tim. 3:1 Difficult times, self-centered men James 5:3 Unbelieving rich store up treasure
Acts 2:19-21 What happens before the Day of the Lord: Wonders in the sky/heavens Above Signs on the earth Below Blood, fire, vapor of smoke, sun darkened, moon turns to blood. Time of darkness, gloom Joel 2:1-2 Rev. 6:12 (Joel 2:31) It is the time when the Lamb breaks the 6thseal FUTURE Joel s prophecy covers the time from Acts 2 to the 6thseal Everyone who calls on Jesus name will be saved Is. 61/Luke 4 Favorable year of the Lord, which is BEFORE the day of His vengeance
Acts 2:22-28 These men of Israel had SEEN the miracles, signs and wonders Jesus performed (it had been less than 2 months since His crucifixion during Passover) God s Part: HE delivered Jesus over to godless men who put Him to death. HIS idea and plan People s part: they nailed Him to a cross BUT GOD: raised Him up again, put an end to the agony of death, since it was IMPOSSIBLE for Him to be held in its power. Peter held these men responsible, but he also quoted from David in Psalm 16:8-11
Psalm 16:8-11; 2 Sam; 1 Cor. David said the Lord was always in his presence, at his right hand: he knew his flesh would live in hope Vs. 27 switches to Jesus, whose soul would not be abandoned to Hades, nor would His flesh undergo decay, for He rose from the dead David also knew the Lord s oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne. 2 Sam. 7 & 23 Vs. 32 repeats the fact: God raised Jesus up again, to which we all (apostles) were witnesses I Cor. 15:1-8 Paul preached that Jesus: Died for our sins, was buried and rose on the 3rdday and appeared to over 500 brethren at one time
Acts 2:29-38 Jesus is at the right hand of the Father, so He received the promise and poured it out on us Peter quotes Ps. 110 as partially fulfilled prophecy His enemies are not a footstool for His feet yet These Jews, along with the Romans, crucified Him They were pierced to the heart : emotionally pierced through only use in Scripture Brethren, what shall we do? Guilt!!!! Repent, be baptized in Jesus name for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
Repent def. Repent: to change one s mind, to think differently, to change one s way of life as the result of a complete change of thought and attitude with regard to sin and righteousness Be baptized in Jesus name for forgiveness of sins Baptized: baptizo submerge, sink, to allow oneself to be initiated by baptism Does this mean if you have not been baptized, you aren t saved and can t receive Holy Spirit? We KNOW this can t be true, so, my opinion: My repentance brings about a complete change of thought and lifestyle, therefore submerging myself with Jesus name and all that implies .
Result of baptism in Jesus Name Forgiveness of my sins Receive the Holy Spirit the Promise Who is the Promise for???? You You Jews Your Children descendants of Israel All who are far off Gentiles! US!!! Rom. 8 All who are saved receive Holy Spirit The Spirit bears witness; we are HIS children
Acts 2:40-42 Peter kept testifying, kept calling them to be saved Result: about 3,000 souls were added in one day They received Peter s words and were baptized They continually devoted themselves to: The apostles teaching, to fellowship, to breaking of bread and to prayer Fellowship: koinonia contributory help, participation, sharing in communion, spiritual fellowship. Used of the intimate bond of fellowship which unites Christians. Breaking of Bread: communion. Used only one other time in Luke 24:35 Jesus breaking bread
Acts 2:43-47 Apostles did many wonders and signs and believers were in awe Property was sold to share with those in need Together daily in the temple and in houses Praised God Lord continued to add to their number. Does verse 44 give approval then, to Communism? All those who believed were together and had all things in common. Luke 12:33 Sell possessions; treasure is in heaven Luke 14:33 Can t be My disciple unless you give up all your possessions
Commentary by R.C.Sproul The law of God in the Old Testament and elsewhere in the New Testament is designed to protect and endorse the legitimacy of private property. Distinctly absent from this description is government, either secular or ecclesiastical, to enforce this activity in the early church. Nowhere does the New Testament require that everybody have their goods in common. Some in the early church were living in desperate poverty while others were prospering under the hand of Providence. Cheerful Generosity is what drove the sharing and distributing by the believers. Old Testament tithe of 10%. All gave the same percentage, but all did not give the same amount
