Transfer Student Resumes and Cover Letters Click speaker icon for audio HOW TO ADAPT YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS TO REFLECT YOUR TRANSFER STUDENT STATUS
Resume- Education Section List both the institution attended previously and BU Law Examples: Example 1 Boston University School of Law, Boston, MA Juris Doctor, expected May 2015 Suffolk University School of Law, Boston, MA Completed First Year of Legal Studies, 2012-2013 GPA: 3.6/4.0 Example 2 Boston University School of Law, Boston, MA Juris Doctor, expected May 2015 University of Florida Levin College of Law, Gainesville, FL Attended 2012-2013 GPA: 3.8/4.0 (1L Rank: 3/223) Honors: Cuban American Bar Merit Scholarship; invitation to Florida Law Review Activities: John Marshall Bar Association, 1L Section Representative
Resume- GPA BU Law uses a 4.3 scale (not a 4.0) for GPA If the school you previously attended uses a 4.0 scale, be sure to indicate that on your resume Example: GPA: 3.6/4.0 or GPA: 3.56/4.00 Otherwise, interviewers reading through resumes quickly may miss that your GPA is not out of a 4.3 scale, making it appear lower than it is
Cover Letter You should mention your transfer in your cover letter to avoid any confusion Consider addressing your decision to transfer You should not include the following reasons: Solely because BU Law is ranked higher than your previous institution You wanted a better chance of obtaining a job You disliked your previous institution You may want to include the following reasons (if applicable): BU Law has a concentration or coursework in the area in which you are interested (and this is an area of law this employer practices) You were outside of Boston and knew you wanted to work and live here long-term
Conclusion You should also review the Resume Handbook and Cover Letter Handbook, both available on the CDO Website: www.bu.edu/law/central/jd/contacts/career/ (username: bulaw15 pw: careers007) If you have any questions, contact Sara Dana in the CDO at sdana@bu.edu
