Recovering from Distance Learning: Device Dependency and the Impact Devices and Smartphone Use has on Students Mental Health, Physical Well-being and Academic Achievement, Post-Pandemic
Agenda: 10 minutes Spark Session about Recovery from Distance Learning Device Dependency. What do we do next? Q1: What is the Problem? Q2: Why is it a Problem? Q3: What Actions should be taken?
What is the problem? Students PreK- college have been distance learning for 11 months Distance Learning mandates device dependency Dissertation Study: 320 high school students, grades 9-12, were surveyed during Covid-19 Distance Learning: 100% have access to a smartphone and a learning device 68% reporting 3-9 hours per day on the smartphone, in addition to a device Device usage can be productive: Google Classroom, Music, tutorial videos, academic support, alarms, tools, etc. Devices and smartphone are addictive: social media, games, movies, and endless applications The Problem: Students are dependent on devices for learning, social interaction, decompression and boredom leading to addiction.

What Actions Can be Taken to Resolve Device Dependency as we emerge out of Distance Learning when schools re-open? Physical Recovery Social Emotional Recovery Digital Detox Communication skills among students while on campus, with detailed student exceptions 2019 Legislation AB-272 directly limits or prohibits the use of smartphones
