Review in 2020 of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Review in 2020 of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Advice Providers Advice Providers Barriers prevent participating equally as partnerships favour larger organisations as lead bidder Feel like Bid Candy to larger organisations leading on bids Brought late in the day with little opportunity to influence shape of arrangements Non-lead organisations seen as delivery and funding does not recognise overheads Needs and issues can be overlooked and prevent from fully participating Still very operate as micro-organisations not always networked Community focus can mean opportunities with advice circles not seen
Stereotype views of BAME advice providers Stereotype views of BAME advice providers Deficit model: the BAME organisations lack or are missing credentials Only need to be levelled up , ignoring complexity Huge variation within communities is overlooked ie BAME labels Similarities in terms of marginalisation in structural and funding positions overlooked Experience of working with hugely complex issues overlooked Assumptions made about quality of advice provided with little evidence Most valuable asset of connection to communities
BAME Advice Providers: what we need BAME Advice Providers: what we need Sufficient sustainable funding to attract and maintain skilled advisers Opportunities to recruit and train new staff including volunteers Management time freed up for strategic view and development Dedicated professional fundraisers to assist with bid writing Share practice and issues and give genuine platform for a voice Proper recognition of the difficult work undertaken with people not reached elsewhere Recognition work is often beyond geographical/funding areas Build on pre-existing successful partnerships wherever found
