Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative Recruiting a total of 20 STEM students; mentoring and teaching the recruited students one-on-one and through workshops, seminars, and specific scientific and engineering courses; and training the recruited students through a ten-week summer hands-on training program at BNL during each summer of the project; Developing and offering three new courses in the Accelerator Science and Technology (AST) and a new Academic Minor in AST under the umbrella of the Electrical Engineering Technology program; Conducting research in Accelerator Science and Technology alongside the ASTD scientists and engineers through a carefully designed summer program ATF User Meeting/BNL/DOE, April 28-May 1st , 2025, Vladutescu et al. 5/8/2025 2
Summer program The first cohort of 5 STEM students will be trained at BNL between June 2nd and August 8th. The work conducted by students throughout the summer will involve hands on training in Superconducting materials and applications to ARDAP, Accelerator Science and Technology, and Ultrafast High Power Lasers and their applications to ARDAP The students will work on one holistic project involving the designing, modeling, building, and characterizing an electromagnet-based particle spectrometer. ATF User Meeting/BNL/DOE, April 28-May 1st , 2025, Vladutescu et al. 5/8/2025 3
Project time line and needed beam time June 2 June 30 June 30- July 11 July 14- July 18 July 21- July 25 July 28 Aug 8 Designing, modeling, building and characterizing an electromagnet-based particle spectrometer SMD Proof-of-principle experiments with the spectrometer using a traditional electromagnetic LINAC accelerator at UED UED Possibly deploy and test the spectrometer in a laser-based accelerator (LWFA) setup at ATF/Participate in UFHP Laser on-going experiments ATF Reporting, presenting, assessing ` ATF beam time needed for one week starting on July 21st ATF User Meeting/BNL/DOE, April 28-May 1st , 2025, Vladutescu et al. 5/8/2025 4
Project Deliverables and Outcomes Students get hands on experience in working with ARDAP by learning how to operate and improve existing the equipment, as well as design new metrology instruments BNL takes advantage of newly built equipment/instruments and gets the opportunity to offer collaboration prospects to the best performing students Diagnostic Tests Results Internal Technical Reports to ATF, NYCCT, and OEP Poster presentations for internal events and conferences Direct and Indirect evaluation of student performance Published papers in Peer Reviewed Journals ATF User Meeting/BNL/DOE, April 28-May 1st , 2025, Vladutescu et al. 5/8/2025 5
