Fusao Tomita, Director of NBiC, leads groundbreaking initiatives in biotechnology with support from organizations like CBIJ NPO and HOBIA. The center offers experimental courses in Hokkaido, collaborates with local governments, and translates ISAAA materials. Japan's stance on GM crops, including the approval of the blue rose, is highlighted. Notably, the first GM-labeled product in Japan, GM Natto, was launched under Dr. Tomita's supervision in 2003. Seminars by ISAAA further enrich the understanding of biotechnology. Media coverage and impressions from various publications and TV stations reflect the impact of NBiC's work.

  8. Editorial: The risks of turning our backs on GM crops (The Chemical Daily) The global cultivation area of GM crops in 2010 was 148 million hectares, an increase of 10% on the previous year. The number of countries planting GM crops increased to 29. In Japan, GM crops have not been cultivated, regardless of the fact that thousands of GM crops including maize are being imported. Japan should consider the "risks" of not allowing the cultivation of GM crops. GM crops are proven to be as safe or safer than conventional crops.

  9. Minister of Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry ordered to close websites related to GM and also stopped committees for importation of GM crops for about 8 mo.
