FJHS CURRICULUM NIGHT How to Advance Your Student Through the JH Curriculum
Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) On April 20, 2006, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm signed into law one of the most comprehensive sets of high school graduation requirements in the nation called the Michigan Merit Curriculum It is designed for the 21st Century student The MMC is crafted around the philosophical belief that all students will need extended learning opportunities for extended learning beyond high school.
MICHIGAN MERIT CURRICULUM HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS MATHEMATICS 4 Credits Algebra I Algebra II ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 4 Credits English Language Arts 9 English Language Arts 10 SCIENCE 3 Credits Biology Physics or Chemistry SOCIAL STUDIES 3 Credits .5 credit in Civics U.S. History and Geography PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH 1 Credit VISUAL, PERFORMING AND APPLIED ARTS 1 Credit ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCE Course, Learning or Integrated Learning Experience LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH 2 Credits In grades 9-12; OR an equivalent learning experience in grades K-12 Geometry One math course in final year of school English Language Arts 11 English Language Arts 12 One additional science credit .5 credit in Economics World History and Geography
What This Means in High School 18 of the required 22 credits needed to graduate are directly from the MMC requirements. Little space for elective options or advanced coursework Early acceleration in classes is necessary if you would like to take advanced courses in the HS, including Dual Enrollment
MATH- ADVANCEMENT BEGINNING IN 6THGRADE Advanced Course Grade Requirements to Enroll 1. 85th percentile or above on 5thgrade MAP math 2. Teacher recommendation 3. Regular attendance 4. A- or better math average 5. Good work completion habits 6. Parent approval 7thGrade Math 6 8thGrade Math 7 Pass Math 7 and Teacher Recommendation 8 *Algebra I Pass Math 8 and Teacher Recommendation * = High School course that will award High School credit and be recorded on the High School transcript. Summative Assessment average of 90% or higher in 6th grade math 3. Teacher Recommendation 8th Grade Math 7 8 *Algebra I Pass Math 8 and Teacher Recommendation * = High School course that will award High School credit and be recorded on the High School transcript Additional options for advancement are available.
