English: Tuesday, 24thMarch, 2020 Our stories should be shaping up nicely. Today, you will be continuing this adventure story with further twists and turns. Before you continue, you need to read back through the story you have written so far. Make sure your next sentence picks up the story without confusion.
As you continue, to write today we need you to focus on two points: 1) How very short sentences can add impact 2) The importance of variety with sentence openers.
Short sentences can add tension and great impact for an adventure story. He turned. He ran. He didn t look back. There was no where to go. No where. Indiana stopped. There was a noise coming from the undergrowth. An eerie noise.
Remember ISPACE as a technique to vary your sentence openers. I I for ing verb openings. S S for similes P P for prepositions A A for adverbs C C for conjunctions E E for adjectives ending ed
I for ing openers Squeezing through the hole that had been carved out of the rocky wall, they descended a treacherous path into a huge cavern. Following the smoky light of the torch, they moved cautiously through the tunnel, stopping to search the niches in the wall. Suddenly to their left, they glimpsed a shelf of grinning skulls. Trudging through the jungle, he felt the eyes of a predator fix upon him: a jaguar hidden behind the lush foliage waited patiently before claiming its next victim.
S for opening sentences with a simile As fast as lightning, Indiana swerved out of the way avoiding certain death from the arrow which was shot straight at him. Like a brave lion, Indiana courageously entered into battle with the beast which charged towards him. As black as coal, the bats hung motionless from the roof of the cave sleeping until dusk.
P for sentences beginning with a preposition. On the tallest step of the temple, Indiana looked down at the surrounding area. Inside the sacred cenote, Indiana s pounding heart echoed. During the chase, the gold ring had fallen from Indiana s satchel and now lay hidden in the undergrowth of the jungle.
