  1. Introduction to air travel Jim Watson Expert Lead and Professor of Energy Policy, UCL Institute of Sustainable Resources

  2. Why is air travel treated differently? Most UK air travel is international, so some plans to reduce emissions depend on international agreements Technologies or fuels that can deliver large reductions in emissions from aircraft are at an early stage Safety considerations mean that change can be slow There has been a reluctance by governments to limit the demand for air travel for economic and other reasons

  3. Emissions from air travel in the UK 50 In 2017, 96% of UK air travel emissions came from international flights. Greenhouse gas emissions (mt CO2 eq) 0 1990 2005 2017 Domestic Air Travel International Air Travel

  4. Impacts of air travel The impacts of air travel on the climate are larger than the impact of carbon dioxide emissions There are other emissions from planes which have impacts on the climate for example, by affecting cloud formation These effects occur over different timescales and are difficult to measure Although they are important, this makes them problematic to report on the same basis as carbon dioxide emissions

  5. Reducing emissions from air travel 200 Committee on Climate Change advice on net zero: Almost all transport emissions need to be zero by 2050, apart from air travel emissions Greenhouse gas emissions 150 (mt CO2 eq) 100 50 0 2017 2050 Road transport Rail Air travel Shipping Other

  6. Reducing emissions from air travel Committee on Climate Change scenario assumes a 25% increase in demand for air travel between 2018 and 2050 This means that demand would need to increase much more slowly than it has done in the last two decades The governments latest forecast includes a higher increase in demand: a 50% increase between 2018 and 2050

  7. What this panel will cover 1. Introduction to air travel What could be done to reduce emissions? 2. Technical options for reducing emissions from air travel 3. Alternatives to air travel 4. Fairness How can we get there? 5. How to make change happen view 1 6. How to make change happen view 2
