Engine Overhaul VS IRAN Jd Kuti Pinnacle Aircraft Engines 2-24-2022
What is IRAN? Inspect Repair as Necessary. The cost of an IRAN will include all the mandatory replacement items Per Lycoming MSB 240W The initial quote will NOT include any parts deemed unairworthy after inspection. IRAN s are quoted at a flat rate price 4 Cylinders: $11,000.00 6 Cylinders $13,000.00 Parts normally found rejected during an IRAN Camshaft Lifters Oil Pump Body Once inspection is complete Pinnacle sends an inspection report with pictures and any SB, MSB, or AD references with links to the tech data. After the customer reviews the inspection report we can discuss the difference in price to continue the repair or move to an Overhaul
Field Overhaul Field Overhauls are performed by a A&P IA mechanic The mechanics work under FAR 91 and are NOT held to the same standards as a 145 CRS This is normally the cheapest Overhaul but not always the best. Most A&Ps don t build engines enough to be proficient at it and can build engines with-in service limits.
TOP OVERHAUL Top Overhauls are generally performed in the field by your mechanic. A Top Overhaul consists of removing all cylinders and installing new or overhauled cylinders While the cylinders are removed the mechanic should inspect the Camshaft and Lifters Any time a cylinder or cylinders are removed all thru bolts MUST be torqued after cylinder removal The crankcase can relax and cause a main bearing to rotate resulting in a spun main bearing. When torquing cylinders or a cylinder it is a 2-person job - the thru bolts must be torqued on both sides at the same time. (this is a huge mistake a lot of mechanics make) Where mechanic's mess up with top overhauls or just in a single cylinder change:
MAJOR OVERHAUL Major Overhauls are performed by a FAA 145 CRS A Major Overhaul will consist of all components being overhauled and each component recertified to NEW Limits. A Major Overhaul will also include all the Powerplant Accessories being overhauled or replaced. All the components and parts on MSB 240W will be replace 100% The engine total time will continue with a TSMO set to 0 A Major Overhaul consists of Factory and PMA parts Some shops will use Overhauled Cylinders. At Pinnacle we believe in using New cylinders with an overhauled engine as we provide a 3-year Warranty
Factory Overhaul A Factory Overhaul is the same thing as a Major Overhaul just performed by the OEM. The Factory will also use OEM and PMA parts. They prefer to use OEM but when parts shortages happen, they will use PMA parts as well. With a Factory Overhaul the engine will run through an assembly line just line the Factory Remans and New Engines. From my years of experience and working at the OEM this can cause problems and lead to warranty work. Engine Shops build engines with one builder and one inspector to avoid issues with multiple people working on one engine limiting warranty.
Factory Reman A Factory Reman is basically a Factory Overhauled engine just with a new logbook and data plate and they call it a 0-time engine. A Factory Reman is built up with parts that are removed from core engines - these are NOT built with new parts The bad thing with a Factory Reman is you don t have any history about the individual parts in the engine where with a Major Overhaul or a Factory Overhaul you are getting your components back and have all the history of the components A Factory Reman is also built on an assembly line.
Factory New All New Components Most Expensive
Questions No, the aircraft will have the same value with a reputable engine shop performing the overhaul. Look at the warranties between the factory and the shop you are looking at. Here at Pinnacle, we provide a 3 year / TBO warranty. Would you rather buy an aircraft with a Factory Engine out of warranty or an aircraft with the engine still under warranty? Will a Factory Overhaul or Reman add value to my aircraft? The data on this is very miss leading. If they could break this down even further into Field Overhauls, Major Overhauls, and Engines built by the factory the numbers would really stir the pot!! The Factory has the highest rate of warranty because of the assembly line work. When you have 20-30 people assembling one engine you are bound to have issues you don t know the mood/attitude of each person or what they did last night. Human Factors play the largest role in the warranty problems. I have been building aircraft engines for a little over 15 years and have never had an engine failure. Pinnacle has been in business for 10 years and have never had a warranty claim. The infinite phrase Infant Mortality This isn t true! An engine can fail at any time. It is a machine. Look back to the first zoom of this 4-part series with Dan Cannon. His oil analysis was perfect. The filter was clean, and I know for a fact his engine didn t call him and let him know it was going to fail. (I asked Dan) The second most heard phrase your engine will talk to you
