Findings and Recommendations August 2014
Findings and Recommendations (1) Plan for community noise surveys at 20 US airports Pre-survey approval process underway SC concern: Survey pre-announcement may bias results Recommendations: Do not identify noise survey airports publicly before the survey Inform airport managers so they can manage community querries
Findings and Recommendations (2) Large reduction in F&E funding in FY15-FY16 SC Concern: Will delay or eliminate air traffic improvements with large environmental benefits Recommendation: Restore F&E funding necessary to develop and implement environmental operational procedures Leverage efforts with NASA research
Findings and Recommendations (3) Significant progress in all areas of Environment and Energy SC concern: Progress not adequately communicated to decision makers and public. Information cannot be easily found on FAA website Recommendations: Create a main webpage at faa.gov/environment with links to significant activities
Findings and Recommendations (4) NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate new Strategic Plan briefed at SC meeting Additional opportunities to work together Recommendation: FAA, NASA and other agencies to work together and up date the National Aeronautics Research Plan
Long Term Issues / Needs and Opportunities August 2014
Issues and Opportunities (1) Low Emissions Aviation Alternative Fuels Fuel qualification based on chemical composition Tailor fuel composition to reduce emissions (NVPM) Advanced Technologies and Configurations Maturation Advanced technologies under development (like hybrid systems, morphing surfaces, advanced configurations and manufacturing technologies will need mauration CLEEN I successful, CLEEN II imminent. Plan a follow on to CLEEN - II
Issues and Opportunities (2) Technology certification process Improve efficiency by using more analysis, less testing Implement focused effort that advances and validates analysis procedures Incorporation of Growth / Diversifications areas like UAS, CST etc into NAS Establish methods and procedures for this integration
Issues and Opportunities (3) Big Data / Information Technology Integration Technology to integrate relayed information (like weather, 4D trajectory, etc) with cockpit information Enables higher level of on board automation Reduces environmental impact Integrated Modeling and Simulation Integration of FAA tool chain for NextGen Enhance tools in probabilistic use of modeling and sim Will enable informed decision making with reduced environmental impact
