Education: Alfred Tatum received his PhD from the University of Illinois: Chicago. He currently resides as Dean of the College of Education and the director of UIC s Reading Clinic.
Tatum's Publications: Tatum s publications: Teaching Reading to Black Adolescent Males: Closing the Achievement Gap Reading For Their Life: Re-building the Textual Lineages of African American Adolescent Males Fearless Voices: Engaging the Next Generation of African American Male Writers Tatum also wrote several journal articles that reference the literacy development of African American Males.
Teaching Strategy It is important for students to read text that will overall have a lasting effect on the student. Each text read should be useful for shaping more responsive textual pathways for struggling and non- struggling readers . Tatum Teachers to chose texts that has black males as protagonists and texts about beating the odds for African American male adolescents. Students are more willing to read a text that reflects upon their own belief.

Address the main idea of the story, as well as the author s purpose. Each student will write a paragraph about the wuote that chose and it means to them, how it relates to their beliefs, and what the theme is to their quote.
