Spring Break Spring Break is April 4-8, in the middle of regatta season. We practice every weekday that week. We also have a regatta on April 9th. As returning parents know, we take full advantage of these days off to get in some very intensive practice time. The kids row for a couple of hours in the morning, break for lunch, then row for a couple of hours in the afternoon. They will be spending a large part of the day at the park. These practices are mandatory for returning rowers. Because new parents have often already made spring break plans, they are not mandatory for new rowers, but they are highly encouraged. If you have not already made vacation plans for spring break, we recommend you plan on having your student join the team for practice. WE DO NOT PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION FOR SPRING BREAK PRACTICES YOU WILL NEED TO ARRANGE TO GET YOUR CHILD TO THE PARK EACH DAY. GroupMe Chats The group chats are completely controlled by the students and coaches. The Booster Club has no access to them, we re not a part of them, they don t invite us to them, and we have no idea what s in them. There has been some confusion over who is and isn t on them, so we sent out the invite link to the parents in the 1/15 newsletter, to try to help get all the kids on the chats. DO NOT SIGN YOURSELF UP TO THIS CHAT IT IS STRICTLY FOR THE KIDS AND COACHES. If you already signed yourself up, please unsubscribe.

SafeSport What you need to know: USRowing has adopted the SafeSport program to prevent abuse of minor athletes. As a member of USRowing, the adults involved in Langley Crew, including crew team parents and coaches, must comply with the SafeSport program. All adult volunteers must have access to, and be aware of the contents of, the Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) All coaches, Board members, and parent volunteers who have regular contact with the team members must be SafeSport certified: Be aware of the policies of MAAPP Complete online SafeSport training and Undergo a background check o o o The background check by FCPS for chaperone certification counts for SafeSport. Since at least one adult per crew family must be certified to chaperone, we strongly recommend that adult take the 90-minute online training to become SafeSport certified.
What Counts as Regular Contact? If you have regular contact with any student not your own, you need to be fully certified. Regular contact is identified as something predictable and recurring. Tag Day Saturday, February 5, 9 am 4 pm Meeting locations and captains: Great Falls: Location Safeway Plaza Starbucks Captain Suzanne Davenport Signup Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a084caca629a4ff2-langley10 McLean: Location Langley Hall (LHS, Door 14) Captain Chris Monteleone What you need to know: Tag Day is the most important day in the crew calendar - the year s biggest fundraiser. On Saturday, February 5, there will be no practice. Instead, crew athletes will canvas the neighborhoods in Great Falls and McLean, requesting donations for the Langley Crew program. Adults drive two to four athletes to pre-arranged neighborhoods. Athletes will go door-to-door in pairs. Tags are hung on doors where no one is home, giving the fundraiser its name. Volunteer drivers will be able to choose a morning, afternoon, or full day shift. ALL ATHLETES ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE FOR THE ENTIRE DAY. The morning session is from 9 am to 1 pm, including an hour for lunch, and the afternoon session is from 1 pm to 4 pm.
What does this mean for you? We need volunteers to drive the kids around pre-assigned territories Because it s a school-related event involving money, a parent must be present the entire time and in control of cash or checks What does this mean for your kid? They are expected to participate for the entire day, unless there s something really major going on They will need to dress for the weather they re going to be in and out of the car and walking from house to house. This is an excellent time to break out that crew swag!!! Each group should have at least one person comfortable speaking to strangers They should familiarize themselves with the information on the tags about why donations are so important to the team
What do you need to do? Sign up to drive in the morning, afternoon, or both. Arrive at the meeting location BY 9 am or 1 pm Meet with the location captain regarding instructions and route assignment Return to the meeting location at the end of shift Turn in your envelope Count cash and checks with location captain, then both sign off on Tally Sheet Morning-only drivers communicate how far in the route they got, so the afternoon driver doesn t duplicate efforts What does your kid need to do? Following their pre-assigned route, they will knock on each door If answered, they will identify themselves as members of Langley Crew, explain that as a club rather than a sport, the crew team does not get financial sport from Fairfax County Public Schools and are therefore dependent on donations Ask the person if they would be interested in supporting Langley Crew Take the money or check, or share the QR code on the door tags Offer a receipt for the donation Thank them politely, regardless of whether they donate, and wish them a nice day If no one answers, put a tag on the door this is why it s called tag day
Q: My child still needs a swim test. Where do I go for that? A: We are in the process of finalizing the arrangements, but we will be reserving a lane at Spring Hill Rec Center and the three lifeguards on the team will administer the test. We are aiming for February 7, and wewill update everyone as soon as we have a firm date and time. Those parents whose children still need to take the swim test will receive a targeted email. Q: Why have only a few chaperone certifications come through so far? A: Fairfax County is severely short-staffed. While no one anticipated the omicron wave, we did expect the certifications to take an unusually long time. This is why we pushed as hard as we did in the fall to have you move the process along as quickly as possible. As of right now, we have enough certified chaperones to keep the buses rolling at the start of practice, and more will come through. Q: What time are spring practices? A: That is currently TBD. Last year, the park assigned each team 15-minute blocks to access the boathouse, to reduce the number of people in the boathouse at any one time. That worked well, and there has been some interest in repeating that, but nothing has actually been decided yet. Assuming that does not happen, we will go back to our regular schedule, where the kids board the bus at 3:30 and we leave the school at 3:45. When we leave to come home depends on sunset we can t row in the dark but we will usually leave by 7:30 pm, earlier in February and early March.
Q: Is there going to be a Great Falls bus? A: We don t know yet. We re doing everything we can to have a Great Falls bus, but we can only do it if it makes sense. The logistics are tricky: Right now, we have 65 McLean kids and 53 Great Falls kids registered. The large motor coaches hold 55 kids each, so we have an overflow of McLean kids. Some of those Great Falls kids drive to school in the mornings, so they would ride the McLean bus to get back to their cars, which means more kids on the McLean bus. Some of the kids drive down to practice. We don t know how many, or which bus they would otherwise ride Not all the kids go to practice every day We generally have anywhere from 5 to 10 kids join crew after winter conditioning is over We will close registration on March 1 this year. That way, we can get a firm idea of how many kids are on which bus every day. We have reserved a third bus to start with, and will adjust accordingly if it s not needed, we will cancel it, as it s rather expensive. One thing we won t do is have one of the buses make two stops Langley first to drop off the overflow McLean kids, then on to Great Falls to drop off those kids. We did that two years ago and it didn t work out at all. It cost us an extra $100 per day, and the Great Falls kids got home even later than if they had been dropped at Langley no one got home much before 9 pm.
Q: How long does it take to get to the park, since theyre driving in rush hour traffic? A: The buses take the express lanes, so it usually takes 40 minutes each way, regardless of traffic Q: How do I get to the SafeSport training video? A: There s a link to it, and step-by-step login instructions, on the website s SafeSport page: www.langleycrew.com/SafeSport Q: Do you need SafeSport certification to drive on TAG Day? A: No, it s not recurring. It s a one-and-done kind of thing.
