This study explores the correlation between performance in lower division courses (Econ 160, 161) and upper division courses in multiple departments within a business school. Strong positive correlations were found, with Marketing students showing the weakest link. Further detailed studies involving non-business students are recommended.

  1. Student Performances in Econ 160, 161 and Upper Division Courses. SOMA PATRA, ECONOMICS, DAVID NAZARIAN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS

  2. Historically ECON 160 and Econ 161 have one of the highest DFU rates campus and have been identified as bottleneck courses. To lower the DFU rates and better serve our student body the department has offered an alternative course Econ 101. Guiding Questions The purpose of this study is find out how performance in these two courses are related to performance in upper division courses to identify which students benefit most.

  3. Data Source: CSUN IR department. Data includes all students who took Econ 160 and Econ 161 from 7 departments in the business school. Overview of Data 10 upper division courses based on popularity were chosen for each department. Correlation analysis was done for all of these 10 courses for the different departments.

  4. Over all there was a positive correlation between performance in Econ 160 and Econ 161 and upper division courses for all departments. Business department students show strongest correlation (around 0.3) while Marketing students show the lowest correlation (around 0.13).   5. Overall, the courses seem to be beneficial to students from all departments in the business school. Concluding thoughts Marketing students seem to show the weakest link. Do a more detailed study for all courses, include non business students as well.
