FGM FGM - - DEFINITION DEFINITION FGM comprises of all procedures involving partial or total removal of female external genetalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non- medical reasons. (WHO)
SDG 5 SDG 5 To Achieve Gender Equality and To Achieve Gender Equality and Empower all Women and Girls Empower all Women and Girls Target 5.3 Eliminate all human practices such as child, early and forced marriage and FGM.
GENDER ISSUE GENDER ISSUE Practice is inclined to one sex. Public Health effects (particularly harmful to women s health, hence women are disproportionately affected) Psychological torture Loss of sexual pleasure Abuse of human rights
INDICATORS Prevalence rates of FGM practice (e.g. out of the total population of women, how many were mutilated? Age group is key). Number of females who have undergone FGM (women 15- 49 years and girl children 0-14 subjected to FGM). FGM related complications and or fatalities rates. Proportion of community members aware of / who have heard about the FGM practice. (how it is done, effects, thoughts about it). Promoters of FGM (Attitudes- those who think it should go on and those who are against it, who are the beneficiaries).
