Outline 1. Writing Assignment Three 2. Song 3. Quick Write
1. Writing Assignment Three Let s go over each part of assignment three.
Hook An interesting hook about happiness. A personal experience works best here. Write about a happy moment in your life and how it made you feel inside.
Introduction Introduce topic of happiness. Show why the topic is significant. Narrow your topic down to more than just happiness. Funnel down to thesis.
Thesis A clear thesis statement which directly relates to the prompt and states what you intend to accomplish in the essay.
Rhetorical Strategies You must analyze strategies in three different sources. One must be American Beauty and one must be from your own research. I recommend larger strategies such as narration, exemplification, big names, cause and effect, and identification. 2+ per source. 1 at a time. Strategies can be repeated across sources. Talk about what they appeal to and how it is persuasive to the intended audience of the source. You can either rhetorical situation and say what each text says about happiness in the intro, or preceding each section on their strategies.
Rhetorical Strategy Paragraphs Topic sentence: state that author X employs rhetorical strategy XYZ in order to appeal to XYZ. Perhaps Author s most important rhetorical strategy is precedent, which appeals to logos and ethos. Quote where the strategy is at in the text. For example, Author asserts, [quote] (#). Explain what it appeals to. If these paragraphs are looking short, I recommend discussing two appeals in relation to one strategy. This is an example of logos because Evaluate how persuasive it is on the audience. This is persuasive/effective because
Assumptions Paragraph Try your best with stating an assumption each author makes in regard to the rhetorical strategies you just analyzed and/or the audience. This can be 1 or 2 paragraphs depending on how much you ve talked about everything else.
Relative Effectiveness You must also evaluate the relative effectiveness of the texts in relation to the intended audiences. Which text is most effective? Why? How do the rhetorical strategies make one text more persuasive than the others? How does the authors attention to the intended audience make the text more effective?
Conclusion Thoughtfully conclude by considering how writing about the topic of happiness will positively impact your life. Go further by stressing the significance of the topic. You can also provide a social commentary on life here. You can go back to your hook.
Academic Sources A scholarly article from the library search or Google scholar. A research study. Books on the topic. A talk by an expert on the topic (professor, Ted Talks, interviews) An article by a reputable outlet (NYT, Time, CNN, WP, NY) Other sources which you deem, in your opinion, to be academic.
Finding Sources Use SDSU library or Google Scholar. Use Google but look for legitimate sources. Use references pages to find sources.
