Dive into the intricacies of analyzing output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter Tool at the University of Essex. Learn about the organization of UKMOD files, linking the model to the User Interface, running the model, and producing output micro-data. Understand how UKMOD works, its original micro-data inputs, tax-benefit policy codes, policy simulations, and tools for analysis like Statistics Presenter and Stata.

  1. UKMOD Using the Statistics Presenter Institute for Social & Economic Research University of Essex

  2. 2 In this lecture, you will learn about: How to analyse the output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter Tool How UKMOD files are organised How to link the UKMOD model to the User Interface (UI) How to run the model and produce output micro-data How to analyse the output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter Tool

  3. 3 Reminder: How does UKMOD work? Original micro-data (FRS for the UK) Input micro-data (FRS or hypothetical households data) Model: Tax-benefit policy code (via the EUROMOD User Interface) Policy simulations (EUROMOD software) Output micro-data = input micro-data + additional simulated variables Tools for analysis: Statistics Presenter (or statistical software e.g. Stata)

  4. 4 Original micro-data (FRS for the UK) Tax-benefit policy rules and parameters (EUROMOD User Interface) Input micro-data (FRS or hypothetical households data) Policy simulations (EUROMOD software) Output micro-data = input micro-data + additional simulated variables Tools for analysis: Statistics Presenter (or statistical software e.g. Stata) STATISTICS PRESENTER TOOL

  5. 5 Statistics Presenter Tool (1) The tool estimates: o distributional measures of income (poverty rates, Gini, S80/20, income shares, decomposition of income sources, gainers and losers) o fiscal costs (government revenues and expenditures)

  6. 6 Statistics Presenter Tool (2) The tool calculates income statistics for: o a single country and policy system o several countries/policy systems o baseline and reform scenario and calculates difference in the income o indicators o a particular type of income (e.g. income taxes) if stronger focus on that income Results can be exported in excel tables

  7. 7 Statistics Presenter Tool Default (1) Locate the Statistics Presenter Tool under Applications in the Ribbon Bar

  8. 8 Statistics Presenter Tool Default (1) The Statistics Presenter Tool will ask us which template we would like to use. Click on the down arrow for more options.

  9. 9 Statistics Presenter Tool Default (1) Use those marked with UKMOD Statistics when using the UKMOD model. For now select the UKMOD Statistics Default report

  10. 10 Statistics Presenter Tool Default (2) folder where output micro-data are stored list of all output micro-data available in the output folder

  11. 11 Statistics Presenter Tool Default (3) I have selected the 2018 output micro-data first and the 2019 data second

  12. 12 Statistics Presenter Tool Default (4) country and system for which results are produced export results in excel table notes 9 tables with results one sheet per output micro-data file (2018 first, 2019 second)

  13. 13 Statistics Presenter Tool MultiSystem (1)

  14. 14 Statistics Presenter Tool MultiSystem (2)

  15. 15 Statistics Presenter MultiSystem (3) one column per system

  16. 16 Your turn: Exercise 1 You will learn: o How UKMOD files are organised o How to link the UKMOD model to the User Interface (UI) o How to run the model and produce output micro-data o How to analyse the output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter Tool Detailed instructions and the full solution is available in word file (Exercise 1_Producing Summary Statistics.docx)

  17. 17 Summary: Exercise 1 You learned how to: o Open the model o Run a single system or several systems at the same time o Analyse the output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter, using the: Default option MultiSystem option

  18. 18 In summary, in this lecture you have learnt about: How to analyse the output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter Tool How UKMOD files are organised How to link the UKMOD model to the User Interface (UI) How to run the model and produce output micro-data How to analyse the output micro-data with the Statistics Presenter Tool
