  2. 10 ! _1 / p.38 Reader s Bank Level 7 A man bought a new hunting dog. He was impatient to see how it would perform, so he went on a bear hunt. As soon as they entered the woods, the dog picked up a bear s trail. After some time, the dog stopped, sniffed the ground and then headed in a new direction. The dog had noticed a deer s trail, which had crossed the first trail. A few moments later, the dog stopped again, smelling a rabbit that had crossed the path of the deer. Finally, the tired hunter caught up with his dog, only to find it barking proudly down the hole of a field mouse.

  3. 10 ! _2 / p.38 Reader s Bank Level 7 Just like the dog, we can get distracted easily and fail while pursuing our goals. That s why once you set a goal, you should just stick to it until the end.

  4. 11 _1 / p.40 Reader s Bank Level 7 Do you love hamburgers? You may be shocked to learn that tropical forests in Central and Latin America are burnt down to make your hamburgers. At first sight, it s not easy to relate hamburgers to the disappearance of the forests. In order to produce the meat for just two hamburgers, you have to burn down a section of the tropical forest as big as your classroom. Also, to make one hamburger, you have to destroy the habitats of 20 to 30 plant species, 100 insect species and dozens of bird, mammal and reptile species.

  5. 11 _2 / p.40 Reader s Bank Level 7 Since the start of the 20th century, roughly half of the world s rainforests have been wiped out to create fields for raising cattle. About 80% of the cattle raised in the rainforests are exported to consumers globally to make hamburgers and steaks. With the increasing demand for meat, more and more forests are likely to be destroyed. If deforestation continues at the current rate .

  6. 12 _1/ p.42 Reader s Bank Level 7 Learning about ancient humans is quite challenging. Thankfully, their bones give us clues and insights about them and their lives. While you re alive, your bones are alive, too. Blood runs through them. They have their own nerves, and they grow, change shape and absorb chemicals just like the rest of your body. After death, the flesh rots away, but the hard bones remain sources of information.

  7. 12 _2/ p.42 Reader s Bank Level 7 By analyzing human bones, researchers can discover a dead person s age, sex, race and height. They can even tell how many children a woman had. The bones and teeth also show what kind of diseases the person had or what kind of food they used to eat. By examining the shape and weight of the bones, researchers can find out which muscles were often used. This can give them an idea as to what kind of work a person might have done.
