DISCOVERY INTERNATIONAL AWARD (DIA s) - DP For up to 2 researchers per proposal (CIs or PIs) For a CI to work overseas on the project with an overseas based PI and/or an overseas based PI to work in Australia on the Project Preference given to overseas based PIs See pp 31 32 of the funding rules CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

WHAT CAN YOU REQUEST FROM THE ARC? DISCOVERY INTERNATIONAL AWARD (DIA s) - DP Not time limited (was 12 month per award over life of the project) but CI s must reside predominantly in Australia for the duration of the project No funding limit (was $20K per year of the project per CI or PI) For international airfares, reasonable local travel, a living allowance and consumables Is a special condition must be separately and fully justified See pp 31 32 of the funding rules CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

WHAT CAN YOU REQUEST FROM THE ARC? Discovery Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Award (DAATSIA) - IN Awarded for same duration as project Can be requested at one of 5 salary levels Can only request one per round Cannot be awarded teaching relief Is a special condition must be separately and fully justified See pp 44 45 of the funding rules CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

WHAT CANT YOU REQUEST FROM THE ARC? Bench or lab access fees Capital works and infrastructure Costs not directly related to project Student fees, contributions or loans CI or PI salaries See pp 11 of the funding rules CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY SUPPORT PHD STIPENDS Project must be suitable for a student i.e. there must be a clear and defined role & an appropriate supervisor Must be written into the proposal As it is legitimate to ask the ARC for a stipend - weigh up whether you are better to request from the ARC or use the DU support as part of the application Cost at $25,849 per annum must be listed as in- kind support CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

BUDGET JUSTIFICATIONS The ARC provides 5 pages in which to justify your ARC requested budget items USE THEM! All requests must be strongly justified and substantiated Make sure your justification mirrors the budget table (use the same headings) Make it easy for the reader CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

BUDGET JUSTIFICATIONS Budgets are closely scrutinised by assessors and College of Expert members Ensure you understand how your budget has been constructed Do NOT simply reiterate your budget table in the justification section provide a compelling argument to show WHY you need funding CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

BUDGET JUSTIFICATIONS - TRAVEL Travel costs must be strongly justified Remember the option of listing some travel under field work and/or any Discovery International Award request if legitimate CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

COMMON BUDGET ISSUES AND MISTAKES Poorly costed budgets using estimates rather than costs that can be substantiated Justifications that don t match the budget table (eg incorrect figures, different years listed) NB: Carefully align your budget justification with your budget table. COMMON BUDGET ISSUES AND MISTAKES Incorrect salary rates (use our salary calculator) Inclusion of EB salary increases (indexation) Do include salary increments but NOT EB increases Use salary rates as at time of submission provided in our salary calculator CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B

FINAL BUDGET NOTES ALL Requests must directly relate to the program or research and all must be strongly justified Keep budget table descriptions simple - elaborate in the Justification Section Keep descriptions relevant across all years to reduce the need to edit each entry in every year e.g. Research fellow level A steps 6-8 @1.0 FTE + 28% oncosts Years 1 - 3 CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B
