Video Resources Plastic Bag Weaving This is the Yabal cooperative in rural Mayan communities of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan re-purposing plastic bag waste into beautiful handwoven textiles. The plastic bags are turned into threads that are then woven into the weft of the fabric and used to create traditional Mayan brocade artwork. The weft in naturally dyed cotton thread. Back-strap Loom Weaving Yabal's cooperative of 37 women weavers in the communities of Pacutama and Chuicutama in the Western Highlands of Guatemala handweave each cotton textile. Using the centuries-old technique of back-strap loom weaving, they weave masterful brocade embroideries into their fabrics using traditional designs and symbols that have been passed on from mother to daughter through generations.
