1 Common Challenges: 2 Common Hopes: 3 Seek Conversations:
Variety 40 Case Studies ; 9 x Job Descriptions ; 8 x Workforce Strategies Adding in Bio Psycho Social allows employer to consider service need & AHP value beyond 'bio Allows value of further-from-medical to be recognised Consultants had a broad top with integrated pillars Progression from Advanced to Consultant is not linear
Impact Able to articulate clinical examples rather than measure impact. Developed 3 examples Change to Destination; One Off Intervention ; Whole Care Approach
Findings Recommendations Recommendation HEE/ Prof Bod Emp Ind 1. Difficulty articulating and envisioning the roles 2. Challenges with infrastructure 3. Advanced & Consultant roles can be described using lego bricks model. Addition of biopsychosocial capability descriptors are helpful to articulate the value of roles further from medical / acute settings. Focused support for challenges in infrastructure to enable potential for AHP advanced & consultant roles across pathways (Finding 2) Trial methods to describe & demonstrate impact of AHP advanced and consultant roles in less acute settings. (Finding 3, 5). Add these & Pledge Bundles to Advanced Practice Toolkit for open access. 4. Progression from Advanced to Consultant level of practice is not linear. More integration of pillars and wider reach of influence is clear in Consultant roles. 5. Impact is challenging to demonstrate and evidence. 6. Increased Job Title alignment with role. 85% of advanced Practitioners had this in title (Compared to 26% in Stewart Lord 2020) Specific exploration of the challenges for smaller professions & Arts Therapies in developing as Advanced Practitioners is indicated. (Finding 7) 7. The challenge for arts therapies to grow in this area, highlighted by Stewart-Lord et al (2020), has been replicated in this study. Increased emphasis on the value and expectation of Advanced & Consultant practitioners to span all 4 pillars. To enable increased clinician confidence and employers to value the education and research pillars. (Finding 8) 8. Research & education pillars are the weakest. Clinician confidence is lower, underplaying activity undertaken. Some do not have time in job plan reflecting employer s lower value of these pillars. 9. AHP learners have found HEI modules do not feel relevant to their role and setting. Those in role longer have found many of the skills learnt were useful. Gaps re: advancing mental health knowledge are noted. Consultants have not had access to a formal training route. Collaborative working with HEI s to ensure AHPs recognise relevance of module content and to close gaps from the biological, psychological and social perspective. (Finding 9) Encourage the establishment of networks and communities of practice to reduce isolation and increase peer support. 10.Practitioners often felt isolated with need for appropriate peer support & mentorship.
