  3. WHAT IS ASEXUALITY? An asexual person does not experience sexual attraction Asexuality is not: Celibacy Anti-sexuality Inability to experience romantic attraction To be mistaken for asexual reproduction A commonly quoted figure is that approximately 1% of the population is asexual (Bogaert, 2004).

  4. WHAT IS AROMANTICISM AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM ASEXUALITY? An aromantic person is someone who does not experience romantic attraction. Surveys suggest that approximately 20 - 30% of the asexual population is also aromantic.

  5. ARE NON-AROMANTIC ASEXUALS ROMANTICALLY ATTRACTED TO EVERYONE? In most cases, no. An asexual person may be: Heteroromantic Homoromantic Biromantic Panromantic And so on Similarly, an aromantic person may be heterosexual, homosexual etc

  6. THE ASEXUAL UMBRELLA Asexuality is at the far end of the orientation spectrum. Commonly associated orientations: Grey-asexual a person who rarely experiences sexual attraction or experiences it in very limited situations. Demisexual a person who can only experience secondary sexual attraction. Can also cross over into the romantic spectrum e.g. grey-romantic or demiromantic.

COMMON MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS (1) Asexuality is the same as celibacy Asexual people never have sex and/or are all repulsed by sex An asexual person who sleeps with their partner is not really asexual Asexuality and/or aromanticism is caused by hormonal disorders Asexuality and/or aromanticism is a mental illness Asexuality and/or aromanticism is a product of abuse or rape.

COMMON MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS (2) Asexuality is just a phase Asexual and/or aromantic people just haven t met the right person Aromantic people can never have a fulfilling relationship Asexual and/or aromantic people are never subject to discrimination Asexual and/or aromantic people cannot experience full lives
