Definition of asphyxia : A condition in which an extreme decrease in the concentration of oxygen in the body accompanied by an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide leads to loss of consciousness and death. Decrease oxygen may be partial (hypoxia) or total (anoxia).
Classical Signs of Asphyxia External Petechiaeon skin and mucosa of face Bulging of eyes Tardieu s Spots ( subconguctival hemorrhage ) protrusion of tongue . Cyanosis is most commonly seen on the face, i.e. bluish discoloration of face . Dark blue hypostasis except in red asphyxia. Bloody froth from mouth and nose .
Internal Increased fluidity of blood . Dark blood . Silvery spots due to rupture of unsupported air vesicles Congested viscera except in drowning the lung appear pale.

Inward fracture of hyoid bone Occurs in (throttling and strangulation) Outward fracture of hyoid bone occurs in hanging
Choking with a piece of cotton in layrnx P.M.P - history of sever cough and gasping . - by dissection can detect the foreign body in air passages .
