Assessing and Building Transfer in Psychology
In this insightful presentation, Ji Y. Son from the Department of Psychology discusses the importance of assessing and building transfer of knowledge and skills. The focus is on enabling students to apply statistical concepts in new situations, analyze data effectively, and make informed decisions. The comparisons between different teaching approaches and cultural assessments provide a unique perspective on enhancing learning outcomes. The project explores topics like children's sleep and cognition, the impact of caffeine on athletic performance, and exercises for enhancing intimacy. Real research questions are presented to encourage critical thinking and application of statistical knowledge in a practical context. Teaching for transfer is emphasized as a crucial aspect of testing for deeper understanding and long-term retention.

What do I want my students to be able to do 6 months after my class is over? 1. Transfer statistics to novel situations. Read a newspaper article and see the statistical ideas (even when no statistics are mentioned). Go into a research methods class and be able to analyze data. Consult on someone else s data. 2. Decide when not know how e.g., when to make a histogram/bar chart/scatterplot (and then google how to make one).
