  1. The Role of Assurance in Fellowship 1 John 5:6-13

  2. Christs Ministry on Earth Began at His baptism (water) (v. 6) Continued until His death (blood) Contrary to false teaching Jesus was always the Christ. He is the Christ (2:2) The Holy Spirit bears witness to these things (v. 7) At baptism John 1:33

  3. Related to Assurance If Jesus was just a man on the cross, there would be no assurance (2:25-26) The Spirit bears witness to Jesus being the Christ. The Spirit is NOT the Christ, as false teachers were saying. The Spirit is truth and He says Jesus is the Christ

  4. Witnesses for Christ The OT says two or three witnesses establish truth The Spirit bears witness of Christ The water, at the Baptism of Christ, the Father gave witness (Matt 3:17) The blood/crucifixion also bears witness. The Scriptures predicted it (John 19:24, 36-37) and the Apostles witnessed it as well as His resurrection (John 19:35; 21:24) Jesus rose from the dead. He is the Son of God. See 1 Cor 15:6

  5. God Has Born Witness God has born witness that Jesus is the Christ through the Spirit, His baptism, and in the death and resurrection of Jesus If we received human witnesses (e.g. in court), we should certainly accept the witness of God But God has said something else about His Son

  6. First, a Parenthesis John will tell us what else God has said about His Son (vv. 11-12) But first he tells us something about the witness of God To believe in the Son of God in this context means to believe for eternal life (1 John 5:1) To believe what God has said about Jesus is to internalize it. It is a life giving seed (1 Peter 1:23) To not believe what God has said about His Son is to call God a liar

  7. What Has God Said? It is a matter of believing it or not believing it It is that simple No such thing as head faith versus heart faith We are either convinced what God has said about Jesus is true or not If we do, we believe what God has said If we don t we call God a liar

  8. Gods Testimony About His Son (vv. 11- 12) God s testimony involves two things 1. What God has given (v. 11) 2. There is only one place to get what God gives

  9. What God Has Given? God has given the readers eternal life. They are believers. They have believed what God has said about His Son (1 John 2:12-14) God has born witness to this: John 3:16; 5:24; 6:47; 11:25-26; 20:30-31)

  10. The Only Place It Can Be Found In Christ: The Son Salvation cannot come thru works Salvation cannot come by church membership He who believes in Christ for eternal life has it. He who does not believe in Christ for eternal life does not have it. Jesus is the life (John 14:6). To have eternal life is to have Him

  11. John Encourages His Readers (v. 13) Those who believe in Jesus for eternal life know they have it at the moment of faith Why? Because God has said it This is where assurance comes from! Not our works These things not a reference to the whole book It refers to what John has just said (vv. 11-12; see 2:1; 2:26)

  12. But Believers Can Lose Assurance The false teachers were trying to take away assurance from John s readers Many teachers of the Bible today do the same Losing assurance does not mean loss of salvation Believers need to continue to believe in this wonderful promise of God (Majority Text adds this last sentence).

  13. Summary The man named Jesus is the Christ God has declared it The Spirit has declared it His baptism, death, and resurrection have declared it All who believe in Him for eternal life have it God has promised it, so we have full assurance That is the Gospel we must preach Don t let people rob you of that assurance It is the key to serving the Lord
