AtlanticOER Development Grants provide financial support to educators in Atlantic Canada's publicly funded post-secondary institutions for creating and adapting Open Educational Resources (OER). The grants are intended for the development of new OER to be used in credit-bearing courses. Funding tiers include creating new course materials, adapting existing OER, and developing ancillary resources. Recipients are expected to commence and complete projects in a timely manner, provide progress reports, and ensure accessibility and proper licensing of the project.

  4. Development Grants provide financial support to educators at publicly funded post-secondary institutions in Atlantic Canada Purpose is to encourage the creation and adaptation of new Open Educational Resources (OER) Grants support the creation and adaptation of new OER that will be used in credit bearing courses at publicly funded post-secondary institutions What are Development Grants? https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  5. Creating a new large scale course material Up to $7,000 Topic should not be covered in an already-existing OER Commonly used for creating new textbooks Adaptation of an existing OER Up to $4,000 Meant for taking an already-existing OER and modifying it to suit course needs Eg: Adapting an American chemistry book to meet Canadian education standards Creating ancillary materials and other small scale course materials Up to $1,000 Meant for educational resources that supplement and support course readings Eg: slide decks, quiz banks Tiers of Funding https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  8. Application Overview Application Overview

  9. Provide a clear overview of the project Address the following: What kind of resource are you proposing (eg a textbook)? What topic(s) will be covered in the resource? What course(s) will the resource be used in? How will you create the resource (eg, are students contributing original work to the resource? Are you writing the resource with the help of a research assistant?) Project Description https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  10. Why is there a need for this new resource? If adapting a resource, why is there a need for this adaptation? Consider: Is there a lack of resources that cover this topic? What gaps exist in current resources that are available (eg, there are only introductory resources but none that go into more depth)? What are the challenges with using already- existing resources (eg, different education standards, a lack of Canadian-focused case studies) Needs Assessment https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  11. Goals for the project Use SMART goal format Impact can be measured in different ways: Saving students money by replacing an expensive textbook Providing students with a supplementary resource where before there was no resource Providing students with more interactive content to improve the learning experience Creating a more inclusive resource (eg, improved accessibility, inclusion of indigenous history and knowledge) Goals and Impact https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  12. Budget Detailed, itemized list of all items in your budget Provide a description and, where applicable, a rate for each (eg, Hiring a student to help import content into Pressbooks and finalize the formatting at a rate of $20/hour) There are certain expenses that are ineligible Timeline Monthly breakdown of activities Focus on main milestones for the project Budget and Timeline https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  13. Ineligible: Paying the salary of an individual already making a salary from an institution Cost of attending conferences (and travel) Administrative overhead fees Payments to a commercial publisher Eligible: Any loss of salary (eg from a course release) Student assistants Equipment needed to create the OER Eligible and Ineligible Expenses https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca

  14. Clear and detailed project description Strong justification for the creation/adaptation of a new resource Goals are reasonable and well-scoped for a project of this scale There will be a positive impact on student learning Timeline and key activities are well scoped and manageable in 2 years Budget is appropriate Adherence to expectations (eg open license, appropriate platform for publishing the OER) Evaluation Criteria https://atlanticoer-relatlantique.ca
