Health & Wellbeing Vision, Values and Aims Our vision is that all young people at Balerno High School experience challenge which builds resilience and fosters growth mind sets to encourage learners to achieve mental, emotional, social, and physical health which is enhanced by an understanding of other opinions, cultures and worldviews. The faculty strive to model behaviour which promotes health and wellbeing and encourage it in others. We offer a wide range of courses and levels which aim to provide challenging contexts for young people to achieve their best in a nurturing and supportive environment at both BGE level and in the Senior Phase.

  3. Health & Wellbeing Curriculum Rationale Learning in Health and Wellbeing at Balerno High School should ensure that young people develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future. Learning through health and wellbeing will enable young people to: make informed and ethical decisions in order to improve their wellbeing; experience challenge and enjoyment; experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves; emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle; develop critical thinking abilities; and establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained into adult life. apply their mental,

  4. Strengths from 2022/23 Excellent relationships with pupils is a key feature across the faculty. Diverse variety of courses and levels. Growing number of courses, levels and pathways suitable for all pupils in Senior Phase curriculum resulting in greater opportunities to engage and achieve.

  7. Health Food & Textiles (HFT) 2 periods of Core HFT per week in S1 & S2 Practical subject (maximum 20 pupils per class) Elective course in S3 National HFT in S4 National Practical Cookery and/or Higher HFT in S5/6 National Fashion and Textile Technology in S4

Physical Education (PE) 2 periods per week of Core PE in S1 S4 then 1 period in S5 and S6 S3 choices - Elective PE (pre-National course) or S3 Sport and Fitness S4 and beyond options S4: National PE or Junior Sports Leaders Award/Performance Skills or Sport & Fitness S5/6: Higher PE or NPA in Sport Development/Excellence in Sport and/or Senior Sports Leaders Award S6: Advanced Higher PE

  9. Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) 1 period per week in S1 S6 S3 elective RMPS S4: National RMPS S5/5: Higher Politics options: Philosophy or RMPS and/or Higher

  10. Pupil Voice Regular feedback from pupils to help improve our courses Pupil voice to help identify where they are in their learning and what their next steps are Microsoft Forms, focus groups, individual conversations 1:1 learning

  11. Communication with home Regular tracking and monitoring Parent/carer Consultation Evenings Emails/phone calls Open two-way process

  12. Responsibility of All Health & Wellbeing is also one of the 3 areas which are the responsibility of all staff Working group and activities/training/materials/ways to support staff delivering HWB benchmarks to pupils (eg ensuring pupils feel safe & included)
