Bear Much Fruit Jn.15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. Read: John 15:1-8
Jn.15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
v.5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (NIV)
Background Israel as a vine - brought out from Egypt & planted in Canaan (Israel) - weeds removed! Ps 80:8 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. Good Seed Noble character worshipped God in captivity! Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? Jesus is the TRUE Vine! True to God; True to His own nature; True to His environment; True to all people... No Fault
I. What is The Source of Our Fruit? All fruit grows on the tree or vine! The branch cannot bear fruit if not attached... Most important principle of Fruit bearing is Attachment! v.4 ...remain in Me v.5 apart from me you can do nothing Some trees/vines have inferior fruit... Poor seed; soil; water etc. Jesus rooted in Father... Jn.3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. (KJV)
Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. KJV In Jesus is all the fullness of Grace In Jesus is all the fullness of Power In Jesus is all the fullness of Knowledge In Jesus is all the fullness of Wisdom Edwin Louis Cole: Knowledge is the Acquiring of facts Understanding is the Interpretation of facts Wisdom is the Application of facts So many well educated, highly intelligent people make bad choices! Not properly connected to the vine! Need wisdom ASK (Ja.1:5)
II. Fruitfulness Removed! v.2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit... A branch cut off from the tree bears no fruit! v.6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers Ps. James Smith: This may refer to those who are in Him Religiously but not Spiritually They know all the correct behavior; procedures, rituals been raised with a form of godliness... 2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. They ve never known the power & sweetness of true fellowship with Jesus!
III. Pruning The Fruitful v.2 every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. A vine must be pruned to bear the best fruit! This can be a painful process! v.3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you Eph 5:26 that He (Jesus) might sanctify and cleanse her (the Church) with the washing of water by the word (NKJV) The Pruning Knife is the Word of God!
IV. What is The Fruit? Gal.5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self- control. Against such there is no law. v.5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit... As the sap of the vine is to the branch... ... the Spirit of Christ is to the Christian.
V. Conditions & Results of Fruitfulness The condition is simply remain or abide in Me (vs.4,5,6,7) The Result? v.8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. #1. The Father is Glorified #2. True discipleship is affirmed and proven! True discipleship well illustrated in Ps.1:1-3
Ps 1:1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. (NKJV)
