Bee Diseases The bees suffer from various bacterial, fungal and protozoan diseases.
Bacterial Diseases American Foul Brood: Caused by Paenibacillus larvae penetrates the gut wall and body tissue of the bee larvae. Symptoms: the diseased brood is intermingled with healthy brood and uncapped ,punctured brood. The diseased brood is initially dull white in color and turned to brown color. Death of larvae takes place after the cell is sealed and cocoon has been spun. Management: Honey bee colony must be placed in the area rich in nectar and pollen flow. The comb and equipments may be sterilized .
Bacterial Diseases European Foul Brood : caused by Melissococcus plutonius a non spore forming bacterium. Symptoms A slight yellow discoloration of the larvae. Most of larvae die at coiled stage on the bottom of the cells. The larvae undergo decaying often giving off foul odor. Management :Severely infected colonies must be destroyed. Sodium sulphathiozole and oxytetracyclin hydrochloride supresses the disease when fed with sugar syrup.
Bacterial Diseases Para Foul Brood : Caused by Bacillus paraalvei. Symptoms and Management: The infected larvae are slightly plumpy and changes to dull white. The cell capping is dark ,sunken and greasy in nature. The control measure as in European Foul Brood can be followed.
Viral Disease Thai Sac Brood Diseases: Caused by Morator species. Symptoms: The infected larvae died in late larval or pre-pupal stage. The dead larvae adhere to one side of the cell Adult bees become sluggish with low foraging activity.
Uses of Bee Wax It is used in production of candles. Used in Face creams, beauty lotions etc. It is used in different pharmaceuticals etc. It is used in water proof compounds, protecting coating etc.
Bee Venom Honey bee venom is produced by two glands associated with sting apparatus of worker honey bee. Bee venom contains proteins, enzymes, peptides, secapin,Procamine,Adolapi n,Protease inhibitor, tertiapin and amines have been found in venom.
Uses of Bee Venom It is used to cure various diseases like chronic pain epilepsy, rhinosinusitis, migraine asthma etc.
Propolis It is mixture of beewax and resin collected by honeybee from plants. In the process of collection of resins ,it is mixed with saliva as well as with wax. It is composed of resins and balsams, ethanol, scented oils and pollen.
Uses of Propolis It is useful in preparing ointments for healing cuts, wounds and abscesses in cattle. It is used by bees for sticking frames, sealing cracks. It is used in cosmetics.
Royal Jelly(Bee milk) Royal jelly is special liquid food, rich in proteins, hormones, vitamins, organic acids, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals secreted by hypo pharyngeal gland of young worker bees. A total of 29 amino acids and their derivatives have been identified from royal jelly.
Uses of Royal Jelly Royal jelly improves immune response and general body functions. It is used in cosmetics.
