What is dual credit? Taking a college course and receiving both high school and college credit for that course. The grade you receive will be the same for both the college and high school, unless your school outlines a different policy. Extra-curricular activities could be impacted by your grade, check your high school policy.
Eligibility Must meet minimum academic requirements. Placement Scores Age requirement (high school student) Must meet any prerequisites. Must have permission from high school to receive high school credit for college courses.
Benefits of Dual Credit Less Expensive Convenience and comfort of taking classes at local high school Lighten college course load to finish degree sooner or to allow time for sports, activities and employment while in college Gain experience to prepare for the academic rigor and expectations of college coursework
Additional Benefits Potential tax benefit Minimizes other potential costs (room & board, travel) Sandburg s Dual Credit Scholarship! Federal Pell Grant (Sandburg only) Must be 14 to apply
Expectations: High School vs. College High School College o Typically 10 < hrs. per week total o Expect 6 hrs./week per course o Rate at which material is covered o Rate at which material is covered seems manageable seems overwhelming o Assistance breaking down large o Challenge of work overwhelming assignments o Application of ideas emphasized o Memorization emphasized o Expected to learn outside of class on o Fed information need to know own o Grades based on larger number of o Grades may be based on small activities number of activities
Transferability Most credits may be used to finish an associate degree at Carl Sandburg College (Dual Credit Plus One Program or AA/AS program while in high school) IAI coursework (Illinois Articulation Initiative agreement) enhances transferability to other Illinois colleges and universities (see your high school counselor) Many credits may also apply to an occupational degree or certificate at Sandburg

Sandburgs Tuition Costs $170 a credit hour $510 for a typical three credit hour course Dual Credit Scholarship: price for up to six credit hours a semester Two three-hour courses for $510 ***Based on 2020-21 tuition rate, plus a $25 registration fee each semester, costs for books not included.
